Type 4 engine removal (dropping gearbox)

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Dicky, May 10, 2013.

  1. Never used this method but im told if you drop the rear of the box its a much easier method. Advice on this please. I assume the driveshafts can stay as they are, the two rear bolts gearbox to chasis are removed, (assuming all cables, wires etc are disconnected) supprt engine, rear mounts unbolted, jack down, support box,(thinking HD ratchet straps or similar) engine to g/box bolts out and bobs yer wotsit.

Thinking Id get van on ramps at rear and jack engine and box down so they are horizontal.

Putting it back in is it a bit of a wobbly affair tring to mate up the engine and box? Not dropping the motor imminently but do have a few jobs that would be easier done with it out!

    Comments please. Muchos'

  2. I've never used that method... What you do need is a jack with a big pad to stop the engine falling off

  3. Dicky.I have just used this method as the apron at the back of the bay can be a bit of a pig and lowering the gearbox can make it a bit easier to slip it on.Though I will bow to anybodies superior skills. This time the two gearbox bolts slipped in quite easily as well. These can be a pain.

  4. I supported the box on another jack.

  5. I think zed has said this is how he does it, and uses a chain to hang the gearbox off the chassis.

  6. Thanks guys. Ive never done it cos I thought getting the gearbox bolts back in might be difficult. as for a big pad on the jack, mines one with a larger "cup" on it that I think is just held on with a pin and clip affair. I could do with making one tbh as i always use a bit of wood as convinced the "claw" will damage the crankcase

  7. Found the jack under the box gives a bit of help if things need a bit more wiggling

  8. I use a motorcycle lift... nice and easy then

  9. I did this method first time on a van. I was used to t1 and no box. It was a bit heavier than expected about 120kg ish. Box and block will be going back in separately. I would now do them separately in future
