  1. It's not common to get a leak between the case and barrel so it may just want the head torquing up. My advice, take it and get it all jet washed, bring her home, whip the engine out, whip the heads off and give it all a good clean, pop the barrels and pistons off so you can get to a connecting rod, whip one of these off and take a look at the bearings. Seriously though I saw it as a daunting task the first time I took an engine apart but it's sooooooo easy it's unreal. If you take the time to take the engine out you may as we'll spend a few extra days stripping and rebuilding it. You can do it on a budget too. All the bearings you need can be got for less than £150, throw in some new rings and a seal/gasket kit + crank seals and it will cost you less than £300 - assuming all else is ok that's a cheap job. Get a set of vernier callipers so you can get some accurate wear measurements. Tom Wilson provides all the detail and images so you can see for comparison against your cam and lifters, even if you need them you're only looking at another £200. Call me wasteful but on a worn engine I almost always replace cam and lifters. Of you choose to refit the old one always make sure you match the lifters to the lobes they came off as if you mismatch they'll wear quicker. Never install new lifters on a worn cam and visa versa. I get a local engine shop to regrind crank for £20 a journal if needed, they'll do any head work piecemeal if needed.

You can spend as much or as little as you want and do as much or as little as you want. The best money you'll spend if you choose to is on a pot of permatex 3h/form-a-gasket aviation sealant, this will keep you leak free. Always buy the victor reinz seal kit, not only is it the best quality but it also has everything you need.

  5. Hopfully will be all good. ignoring the paint work, the engine on the pickup is my only worry so hopfully this will give us a bit of peace of mind to head a bit further in the old lump :)
I had a look around their workshop when i went to get a head from them and it seemed like a really well run shop :)
