Type 2 engine rebuild

  1. Nope, I'm good now. Just being paranoid. Crank is good!

  2. End float time!

This has caused a little confusion in that I put it all together, and found I had no end float! Then I had the issue of getting the flywheel back off! So I came up with this idea

And strapped it down on the bench! And it worked, so, top tip ;-)

Anyway, without the shims I measured 0.75mm. So with 3 small shims at 0.24, it should pull it into tolerance. So, I'm happy.

Also, at first I though there was only 2 shims, but found the third stuck to the think shim, so, 3 shims!

  3. And a bit of paint on the oil pump cover because I'm sad like that.

Looking good. Is this the engine out of your van or a spare one as a project?

  6. Yes, it's the one out of my van.
It was burning tons of oil, so was in need a a rebuild.
So armed with a book, and tons of help from the forum, of I went!

  7. Ok, slow progress this week, but short block all done! End float sorted too. Bit more pretty paint, and some shiny bolts too :-D

And some primer on the tin ware.

  8. Is the engine going in your van?

  9. Yes.
Came out of the van too. Why, problem you can see?

  10. The oil filler tube... Those long ones make it quite difficult to put oil into the engine... Just a minor observation :)

  11. Oh yes. Always use a small bottle of oil to fill up.

But hopefully, after the build, that should become less of a need!!

  12. Ok, had issues with the oil pump, and it needed adjusting. With the pump installed, I could not turn the crank...... I have installed a scat cam, with a three bolt cam gear. This puts gear offset to the original, so the oil pump was too long.

I took 2mm off both gear shafts. Also adjusted the drive gear to match. Now it fits a treat!

  13. Next up, heads..... Need to find myself a valve compressor that doesn't cost an arm and a leg!

  14. Heads on hold for a while, but I have the pistons and barrels (1641 forged)
Did a weight match using the micro scales, and worked out where I will place them
    On the short block.

Decided to take the two lightest and place them close to the fly wheel.
And the two heaviest close to the pulley wheel.

I idea being the apposing pistons as close to the same weight thinking they will work together at the ends of the stroke cycle. And the two heavy ones should balance out a little with the flywheel.

What do you think? Pics to follow soon.

  15. I think that you need to actually match weight the pistons...

There are various articles on the interweb about it :)

  16. Yeah, I have seen them. But I do lack a dreml tool, and the area to remove
Is right inside the piston. I started by scraping little bits, but it took ages
With almost no change in weight!

  17. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Good excuse to buy a dremmel then. ;)
