Type 1 exhaust to head nut advice ;)

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by D5andy, Nov 25, 2013.

  1. Reading Bentley it recommends using M8 self locking nuts - so i ordered some from somewhere volksie which said they where suitable for the exhaust to head

But what arrived is some M8 nylon self lockers - are they really the right thing.... Won't it just melt

What do you folks use - cheers :D

  2. Stainless plain nuts are generally what I use these days... unless I get the fitting kit that has the copper plated ones in!!

And yes, they nylon will melt!! :)

    They don't melt!

  4. First I've heard of that. I'd also imagine Nyloks would melt.

I use brass M8 nuts. VW must be the only folk who didn't use brass nuts on the exhaust.

  5. Brass are great provided they're not worn, brass is soft and can be a bugger and will round off quite easily.
If you want some aerotight ones send me a PM, I always fit them with copperslip, they have the advantage that they actually clean the thread as you remove them, thus causing less grief.
    I have brass ones too.
If your threads are a bit iffy, these can also work well. They also protect the exposed portion of the thread.
Remember Copperslip is your friend, not pretty but you will learn to love it.

  6. Thanks TBR only just read this - but already fitted with a mixture of brass and stainless as I found some spare in an exhaust fitting kit I forgotten and found ...otherwise I would've been interested
It's getting to the point where I don't know what bits I bought and need o_O
I wasn't sure whether to use copperslip so erred on the side of caution :( never mind there's always next time ;)
    Cheers :D

VWH sell some with inserts that seem to combine not coming undone at random times with being able to undo them with a spanner.

Stainless is not always a good idea because it can gall and weld itself to threads.
