Hi would a pair of 40 idf,s be too big for a stock 1600? Will they drink petrol ? I've been offered a pair and can't decide .. Thanks Cam
Use 28 venturis and they'll be fine. I run them on a 1600 in my buggy which is admittedly tuned but I use bigger venturis.
^this. I’ve got Dell DRLA40s on my 1776, and they run just fine, strangled right down. How much gas they use depends on the jetting and - mainly - your right foot. Take it gentle and they’re not bad at all, stomp on the pedal and they’ll drink fuel (but your van will shift).
Whether the carbs are suitable depends on what you want the engine to do; there is a big difference between a buggy and a bus engine. Assuming you want a 1600 engine to push a bus along with good torque at low revs, 40 carbs are too big, you can choke them down but they will not be easy to tune, especially if the vents are too large and the engine won’t perform well at low revs. I’d find a set of 36’s for a 1600 but if the 40’s are cheap... A pair of new 40IDF copies from China will be less than £200, and then you need manifolds, filters, linkage and vents and jets to suit your engine (genuine Weber vents and jets fit the Chinese copies). Many will say Chinese carbs are poor quality, I’ve never seen any so can’t comment but I’ve used other components in an engine that have been made in China and have been more than happy with the quality and certainly good value. Like anything manufactured these days carbs need to be stripped, cleaned and checked before use, float levels will almost certainly be wrong straight out of the box.
Just a word of warning. I bought a good set of secondhand 36drlas same as idfs but needed to jet them down as they were out of an alfa , spent over £500 for various jets venturis x 4 manifolds and filters . In the long run would have been better to have bought a full twin carb kit new.
These are off a 1600 with 28mm choke/venturi so should be ok for the jetting etc . I've read a few people saying the quality is ok and other saying they're shiv , typical internet i suppose . Just wondered if anyone had first hand experience with them .
Did they come off a 1600 from a bug or a bus? 28mm vents is how the carbs come as standard and without knowing the engine spec and what size the idle jets, emulsion tubes, air correction, pump and main jets you’re just guessing they’ll work.
Did you find twin carbs made much of a difference to a 1600 hp? Mpg? I'm rebuilding my engine, apart from going 1641 as my b&p needed to be replaced everything is complete stock and I have sourced all the missing parts. Really can't decide if twin carbs will be worth it or just stick to stock?
Worth having, IMHO. You end up with an engine that can actually breathe properly. You can hear the difference.
When set up right, they do make for a much better driving experience. Much better torque at low revs, and much smoother all round.
