Toyota mirai hydrogen fuel cell car is it the future?

I'm guessing electric cars will no doubt prove very good around town and over short journeys, but the inconvenience of long breaks to recharge may prove their downfall over longer journeys. The alternative is either a petrol or diesel hybrid or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles

Some London busses are Hydrogen fuel cell powered and considered good. I read they're adding to the fleet so i guess it's only a matter of time before the technology is transferred to trucks.

Meanwhile the Toyota mirai seems to be leading the way in hydrogen fuel cell cars.

    It isn't too ugly either

Perhaps Vw should consider hydrogen fuel cell powered ID buzes when they eventually get around to selling them

How clean is it as a technology does anyone know?

  5. Research has shown that it's good enough to do a big, big carpet, for less than half a crown.

I suppose it's about tracing the carbon footprint. The hydrogen itself is one of the cleanest forms of burnt fuel, but the manufacture process of everything is probably carbon heavy, and the making of the hydrogen will either be from electric created from the power stations or green energy. My personal hope would be that they concentrate on using greener sources to fuel the manufacture of the hydrogen, but you just know the greedy so and so's won't!

What will it be like on my polycottons?

  8. Pretty clean check out ITM power. My lad works for them, they produce hydrogen refuel stations as well as other hydrogen production/storage solutions.
It’s electrolysis using water & electricity to produce hydrogen, sounds easy

Electric cars are abit like re inventing the wheel ...it's all been done before and not as green as it;s made out to be . hydrogen power is deffo the way forward from what i have read .
Times will be changing on green issues sooner than we think ...what with Australia alight and not been put out .

I have done it off a 12v battery and a jar of water. It is simple in the crudest form, but producing it in quantity and storing such a light gas must be trying.

It does seem to make sense to me, but there are always questions I guess. I think there is a genuine fog surrounding the true facts of emissions for all of the fuel types, probably because it’s not as clear cut as petrol or diesel which we’ve been measuring for years?

aren’t people a bit dubious about its explosive qualities?

I like hydrogen, if it ever leaks it gives tall people a headache and makes them talk funny.

    Or is that helium?

If you have a helium car low on fuel you can perform street muggings on clowns and steal their balloons for top ups.

Unless you are scared of clowns - in which case wait for a kid to purchase a balloon and swap it for a werthers original - the kid will be happy as they have a sweet, as will the parents as you won't have kidnapped their child, you merely have their balloon.

I think that's Helium. That just makes the car float and sound like a yammy fizzer!

  16. From my perspective, hydrogen fuel cells are the way forward BUT - and it's a biggie , the petrochemical industries control the world - fact .
Can't see the oil industry going under without a fight , and it'll be a global fight which will make it WW3 - not much left to power with your hydrogen cells after that little fracas ...
The prospect of Hydrogen power was first available over 100 years ago and it was a toss up which to develop and power the blossoming auto industry , they decided on petrol - an economic choice as there was plenty available where the majority of cars were being built - the USA .
The hydrogen driven engine was a European idea which is why the American powers shunned it but how different the world would be if the world had gone down that route...

The trouble with any alternative power source is that it takes a significant amount of energy to get it into a usable state. It comes down to where that energy comes from. It's no good everyone driving electric vehicles if the electricity is generated by fossil fuels. The same with hydrogen cells. Carbon capture doesn't strike me as a sustainable solution, similar to the cost and difficulty of storing spent nuclear fuel. It's got to be solar or wind powered ultimately.

And promptly jumped on by the pro fossil fuel press. I think the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle is such a viable alternative that they’re scared. These issues can be overcome just like the Bunsfield disaster and lots of other refinery disasters over the years.

Next we’ll be harping on about the Hindenburg disaster.

Think Hydrogen is a fair bit more pricey than electric at the "pump", so until that changes it won't take off.
Forget the details but the trend is to toward producing the hydrogen at the filling point as not only will that take road miles off the slate, deal with dangerous tanker loads on the road, and take one transfer operation out of the equation, there's existing infrastructure for electricity and water at filling sites ........ Shame the sales trend is for many more SUV's. Think that's not helping.
