Towing a bay with an A-Frame...

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Joker, Jan 21, 2012.

  1. Think i've asked this before. Anyone done it/do it?
    :)

  2. your mad! unless your going to hook the handbrake cables up to a braked ball hitch. 2ton unbraked = hedge(possibly) and at least 3 points for over weight + £100 a kg fine about 1200 quid

  3. get yourself a trailer and good size transit or 4wd to be safe not sorry with a fine C:)

  4. How far you going and what sort of roads?

  5. I used to drag loads of vehicles with a a frame ,but times have changed and would not even consider it now...

  6. Ive been doing it for a while, and never had any issues with the police. But reading the other posts I think i might check the law before i go out again

Personally I wouldn't do it. Land Cruiser and trailer all the time.

It's a mine field out there about weights and brakes etc and those A frames are just not that safe.

I think you are legally ok to use to take van from a dangerous position to the nearest safe place. e.g. off the m'way to the nearest turn-off.

i "thought" these a frames got round the law by making out the towed vehicle was a trailer, however i "think" the max unbraked weight is 750kg? so you would need to rig brakes up, also the tow vehicle must weigh more than the trailer by a fair percentage, therefore i wouldn't tow a bay with a bay, get a landy and an ifor williams and do it right matey.

im pretty sure on a technicality the towed vehicle IS braked thats why the a frames are a grey area. i have towed with one with no issues either. with a proper trailer and a bay on you can get up near 2.5ton which limits what you can tow with on the weight allowance but if the vehicle is plated (as landrovers are) for a higher weight then its legal to tow with even if the weight balance doesnt fall within the guidlines

i have only towed a van on a trailer tbh - we used a land cruiser and a ifor williams braked trailer -- in all honesty Nial its not too expensive to use recovery type companys £150 to get my bay home from Hook in Hants .

I meant to say i drive wagon and drags and as a rough guide the trailer is plated at 14 tonnes and the prime mover at 18 tonnes ( the wagon itself ) the trailer also has to be braked , if its the other way round weightier on the back it drives like a cat with a brick on its tail .
