New engine in and sounding sweet, however seems quite hot after test run Engine has been static timed only , would advancing or retarding help with cooler running . No strobe available at the moment .Or is this to risky without a strobe ?
imo, yes strobe timing is the way to go ,and by altering timing it will effect the heating/cooling,, I would not risk running mine had I not strobed it and knew it was as close to spot on as I could get, I have set timing by ear simply to start a vehicle ,but no ,to running it .
OK cheers , second question ,is a DIY hometune kind of strode any good, the rolling road is 45mins drive away ? need to get the van there somehow
As always mate its a "your call" situation , my own (71 ancient) bus is as basic as they come so I have I reckon a greater margin of error allowed , my own timing is not set as per spec book(s) I got so screwed off trying to establish which timing mark was the applicable one ,I done the"John Muir suggested way " which is , set it ,run it, do oil dipstick test ,readjust as I feel ,run it do dipstick test.....until by my opinion/experience its as sweet as I reckon its going to be >X of going on a rolling road. if as you say ,you have dropped a new lump in,if it were mine I would be treating it like a new born, I would have to strobe to check/re assure myself.

you just rev the engine until it stops advancing... you won't need to take it to 3000rpm to hit full advance!!
