After a top (sides) end rebuild,i.e,new heads...How many miles 'till the head bolts should be re-tightend to the spec torque?...As i adjusted my valves the other day after doing around 3,000 miles since my rebuild,as they were all pretty 'gapless', if you see what i mean.I re-gapped them and it went like a dream, but does that mean that the heating and cooling effect of the engine has increased head bolt length...?

If the heads were loose the gaps would have got bigger.
It would have been better to check the valves after 2 miles rather than wait for 3,000. If you drop a bollock, the sooner you find out the better. Not saying you did BTW.

  3. And...you shouldn't need to retorque the heads. You can't get at all the nuts anyway.

  4. Which engine??

If it's a type 1 then you don't need to touch it... If it's a type 4, and you've put the "head gasket" back in, then you are running a high risk of head leakage...

Yeah,i see what you mean, but i did check 'em around 100 miles or so,and they were ok,bearing in mind ive only done around 3000 miles since i did the heads around 6 years ago...i dont use it much, its just a toy.(a bit like 'adult meccano' as i drive a more 'reliable' van for my work, and we normally use the family car to get around in...)
    And i know i'll get jip for that,im sure.lol.But i digress.

But i just wondered where the gaps had gone from the tappets, thats all.
