I put that stuff in mine, I did take it for a run, but it's still noisy on over run. Although I do agree it takes ages for the R&P to go terminal, you'll know about it, when it does; this is the one from the Bug.
No, not that simple, I am afraid, it's what's happens when you pull wheelies and break axels in a Bug Not me, I hasten to add, well I probably finished the job off, but I didn't start the process, not by any means. I bought a car that had been raced, it sounded chic and glamorous at the time, but it's really just paying to fix the fun someone else had already had
Engine out. Gearbox out. Swap bell housing to new box. Refit. Fill with oil. BBQ. If the new/used box is as bad or worse get your original rebuilt and go back to step one. Just means you'll have to feed me twice.
My gearbox was exchanged in 2011 for a £650 gearbox of unknown everything, because third gear decided it was another neutral about a day after coming back from a trip to Cornwall. The old one was quieter than the new one. The new one whined. It jams in 4th gear sometimes. It has now done about 70000 miles. And it suddenly started whining louder ... when I improved the engine sound insulation...
I need to sort out my gearbox it whines badly and now my ears hurt from turning up the stereo. Any idea what’s up with it.
I should've posted a pic of the "bargain" 1776 I bought years ago. It had been so ragged, almost all the lobes had been worn off the cam. Wondered why he wanted to get rid of it
I had mine revised last month from a reputable guy not far from me. He explained me what he did and what can go wrong with a t2 box. He machined the nose cone to use a steel reinforcement plate due to excessive play on the 1&2 shaft and change the bearing. Pretty common issue. 3rd syncro was shot, thats uncommon. Main bearing was still good, if it was needed to change it, parts alone are 200€. New gaskets. 350€ all in. Really worth it.
Sounds like you're just the bloke Andrew, I'll pass the spanners and make the tea (in a pot of course).
The crack in the nosecone seems pretty common. The bearing on the mainshaft(?) starts to creep backwards and starts a crack around the supporting rib in the nosecone. The plate is about the only way of stopping it.
Well, if you're offering tea, spot on. How could one refuse such a gracious offer. It will be made with leaves and a decent strainer, won't it? Non of this riff-raff teabag nonsense
Could you share who it is? Sooner rather than later my 6-rib will need to be overhauled again and I’m not going to spend another £500 getting it to the UK and back. And after Brexit I probably couldn’t, even if I wanted to.
If you don't mind me asking, I thought you had yours rebuilt relatively recently? Or am I mis-remembering?
Just catching up with all your lovely replies, now that I'm home and clean and supper is cooking! So from all this I have learned that I could get a CE code rebuilt gearbox, and put my existing bell housing on it, negating the need to source a new starter motor. Sounds good. Or I could whip me ol' CU code out, and get it rebuilt - but thus leaving Clem off the road whilst it's done. I also learned that @paneuropaul will swap gearboxes in exchange for a BBQ, and @Fruitcake and @F_Pantos will do the work for a nice cup of tea as long as it's made with proper tea leaves in a pot. God I love this place
You’re remembering correctly. It was overhauled two years ago but unfortunately the weak 3rd gear synchro is just as weak after the overhaul as it was before.
