thread advice

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by wendygun, Feb 13, 2015.

  1. fitting oil cooler and by mistake (mine) ended up with differant threads on parts of the system.
all the parts ordered have 1/2" bsp threads but by mistake i seam to of ordered the filter head with 1/2" npt threads. the bsp and npt are said to be compatable but the bsp thread will only go into the tapered thread by about 3 threads by hand, would probably go in further with a big spanner but don't want to nacker the part or the engine bay covering in oil when it fires up. any advise
sending part back if they will have it and swapping would probably cost about £20 but then i'll have another 2 weeks delay and i want to be out driving the bus not looking at it

npt is an American taper pipe thread form, not compatible with BSP. The thread angles are different!

  4. NPT are taper threads, which correspond (roughly) to BSPT. If you have straight BSP, it will be a parallel thread, so not compatible at all. If you look it up, the 1/2" sizes are both 14 TPI, so it's probably the taper that is catching you out. Try an hydraulic fitting place as they often have BSP - NPT adapters.

  5. What's a filter head?

  6. forgot you worked in this field sorry.
i thought the bsp threads were the same apart from the taper but then again i can't even order the correct partstuesday_wildchild

The thread angle is the main differentiator, NPT is 60' against 55' for the BSPT

  9. Straight and taper don't match regardless.

Same as Owen mentioned, have you got a local hydraulic supplier, they'll sort you no problem

  11. I had this discussion when looking at matching up some vac pipe fittings. The hydraulics guys tend to say that you can 'make' some of these sizes fit together, at least so they seal. I prefer to get adapters so the threads match properly.

Give me a minute I'm trying to remember a quicker place :)

I'd go for adaptors anytime opposed to making them fit! We use 210bar on our hydraulic ring mains, these have to be spot on..we have pipe rated to 300 bar. Better doing it right first time!

@wendygun what is the exact thread size of what you need to get sorted? ie 1/2" by 1/2" bsp male to male (or female to female) adaptor

Theres only two of us in work on Monday, if you don't get any luck in sourcing anything, drop me a pm & Ill see what we have on our shelves at work
