thermo stat and flap fitting

  1. Can this be done with the engine still in the van? I have a sinking feeling that the bloody engine builder has left it off as I could lift the fan shroud straight off about 6 inches and I seem to remember it being connected to a rod to stop this. It never even occurred to me until to now and the engine is in and I don't fancy having to take it out again. I will have a good look later and I hope that its just the rod thats come off otherwise there will be some colourful language going the engine builders way.

  2. Flaps (sorry)

If its a type 1 its engine out as you have to remove the fan shroud dont know about type 4s

  4. yeah its a type 1. I will have to investigate further

  5. Sorted that for you
    :)

  6. Just went to look and it looks like they've not fitted the thermo stat. I will have a closer look to tonight to see if the flaps are still there. God know why they would take them off to start with.

  7. this further confirms to me that I made the correct choice building my own engines. I'm sure there are a few good souls out there but they seem to be few and far between. Sounds like your engine builder fits into the ******er column...

I'd never let anyone touch my engine - only person i've seen and met who i'd trust is @Paul Weeding.

I had an issue with my newly rebuilt engine which meant it had to come out again. I suggested that they might wish to drive over, remove the engine, take it away and fix their fault, drive back and refit the engine.

They looked a bit stunned at first and then suggested that they thought I would be doing all that for them just leaving them to fix only their own fault.

I then explained that I pay a mechanic to do those sort of jobs for me and as I had already paid him to remove it before they got hold of it, and then paid him again to fit it after they had supposedly done the job, I had no intention of paying him myself to do it all again, given that the reason it needs to come out again is down to them.

I then asked if they knew of any mechanics who worked for free, but they didn't.

In the end they paid my mechanic, Zed, to take it out and refit it afterwards.

    paradox and zed like this.
  9. 'cause they are *****wits and probably stole them to fit onto someone elses injun?
    :)

  10. Take a look at the bottom edges of the shroud, where they meet the cylinder head tin. You should see two M6(?) mounting bolts on either side - these hold the flap assembly in. Or reach around the back and see if the flap linkage is there. If either's missing, it's not been refitted.

I assume you had a flap assembly and thermostat in the first place? If yes, and it's gone, get it back!

Go and give the builders an earful - no excuse for not refitting.

  11. PS When you say you can lift the fan shroud, I assume this is after undo-ing the mounting bolts? Or are they missing as well?

  12. Well. Managed to get hold of them and they reckon they left em out because my engine had history of over heating. To be fair they offered to pick the van up and do the work and return the van but they gave me a 3 week lead time so I just told him I want the parts sent out and I will refit them myself. Don't really want any one messing with the van as you can't seem to trust anyone.

I would explain that three weeks is unacceptable and you intend to bring in another company to correct the mistake they made and you expect them to foot the whole bill, unless your correction work is moved to the top of his queue and is treated as urgent.

If you mess with the engine and then another fault rears its head in the next few months the fact that you've been playing with it will muddy the waters enough that they may wriggle out of a warranty claim.

My builder was initially reluctant to do the work the next day as well, I spoke very pleasantly, and said that I hoped we could get all this sorted out without me having to bother putting claims in with the small claims court.

Get pro-active on his arse and make him do the job you paid him to do. You gave him good money, insist that you get good work.

you can fit flaps rod and all associated parts to cool with type 4 engine in, i did it at techenders.

I'd have expected them to fix it properly not just bodge it. Was this a pucca engine builder?

yeah but no but its a type 1 innit?

  17. Indeed. Fitting the flaps and adjusting the thermostat is hardly rocket science. If the stat's gone, fit another.
