The rat look

  1. Hi
Now I'm starting to put the van back together slowly as I want to drive it there won't be any time for a full paint job , the bus is roller painted anyway but while doing it I sanded back areas to make them better .
Now ive done this I really like the flat matt finish and the bits were Ive rubbed through the paint so ill be keeping like this for now I think .

I know most don't like the rat look but I want to use the van so why not but my question is ,is it a rat or a half a tempt of a paint job ,all the running gear is painted gloss black and has all new parts this is not a van that has been pulled out of a garden and called a rat .

So thoughts on this can I call it a rat or just me being lazy lol ;) will have some shiny parts but being aftermarket stuff they will soon fade

Genuine patina is a thing of beauty....so sun bleached paint, the odd knock and scratch, worn out steering wheel etc....all cool in my eyes. I don't like buses that are pristine, unless they are as new of their era (e.g. a really straight original boggo ford fiesta from 1978 I saw the other day was wicked).

There are a couple of rat look cars around here - a polo and a beetle - both have had all the paint stripped off and have a lot of surface rust - to me they just look stupid, admittedly different, but over concieved and executed.

Your bus is a rolling resto - who cares if its called rat look or not...

  5. If its on the road and you're enjoying it who cares mate! My paint ain't perfect but if I can drive it about then its all good. Just prime and spray repaired parts and use it til you've got enough for a respray. :)

  6. It's not that I care I just don't really know what classes it as a rat I like faded paint and the rust on the rear bumper I would not bare metal a car or van to make it rust all over I thought the idea was that it looks crapy but really its solid ?

But yeah I'm going to run as it is will be one ish colour on the bottom just flared back .got loads to do on the bus and the paint will be the last now ,I do like the Crome and new head lights I put on yesterday
I personally like zeds bus as it looks cool with the dents etc

  8. Finish it, I'm dying to drive mine everyday, go to shows but I took the plunge and stripped it, making me paint it.

    Paint it dude ;)

  9. I've already roller painted most of it it just will take a lot longer to sand it all again and paint it so ill do it bit by bit

Looks like a rat to me
There is a difference between rat look and a patina look and i think yours look good for a rat look as long as the underneath is good go with it
but i would at least get some wax on it to slow the rust down

As for electrics where are you

  13. at the end of the day it's your bus mate, as long as you're happy with how it looks then that's all that matters.

  14. Well all the main running gear is painted in 2 k black with all new brakes ,ball joints ,drag link and brake lines and the chassis is under sealed just to keep it usable .

    I'm in Tamworth matt
And yes I have moved house was a while ago but been busy so not had the bus out

Just go with it. Make your own style for the bus and you will stand out with a bus that is unique

The looks can be done a bit at a time down the line

  19. Mine looks very ratty at the moment but I dont have the money for a re-spray. just done the outer sill and inner sill, patched a door bottom (properly not filler and mesh) so at the moment it's blue white, green and fifty shades of grey (in a non sexual meaning). I quite like it. tons of charm and it's not hiding anything. I like to think it's showing it's injuries with pride lol :D
