i'd not updated this for months with usually putting stuff in the "what you done to your bay today" thread so i thought i'd resurect it.
I've seen a couple of recent posts regarding dodgy switches and wiring etc and I thought i'd post this little musing, I've not driven my van since Septembers techenders when we fitted a new accuspark dissy and on the way home it developed a misfire, I did however change the leads and plugs plus fit a new coil and a german quality rotor arm and dissy cap the following weekend to try and eliminate all igntition areas however I only ran it on the drive and never drove it until this morning, I can reveal that it's really smooth and also seems to pick up a little better, it certainly starts easier! the other thing that supprised me is the temperature gauge - I have a cylinder head temp gauge that always reads at 350 degrees when it was in normal 60mph driving maybe 340 or 360 if going steady or under load, however when I changed the plugs I found the pick up wire for the gauge under number 3 plug and it was dirty and rusty so I cleaned it up with sandpaper and refitted it along with a new plug, now it reads around 270 degrees so i'm guessing the "dirty" connections were causing a resistance issue? I've just put some injector cleaner in and half a tank of petrol so hopefully I may get a slight improvement on mpg as well.
Mine had shocking lights before the new loom and slow wipers - both of which are fine now - so even if it's not the connectors old wiring still oxidises along the actual wire causing some resistance.
^ so after all those changes/improvements you've made to tin and flaps it was a dodgy connection? Never mind at least it prompted you to get it all sorted.
one thing I will say is driving an old van with poor lights (compared to a car) and crappy wipers and no screen fan as such in the howling rain on a dark morning to work certainly makes you grip the wheel tight.
i'm sure refitting all the cooling etc is a bonus in itself but yes it seems the connection was making it look like it ran hot.
Your not wrong there mate. Add in a bit of side wind for good measure as well. I ran a couple of tins of injector cleaner through mine when i had FI, made a big improvement. So did cleaning all the connections on the FI system. Nice to see you posting in this section again.
years ago they were called "kick" but yeah i must have bought the same trainers for 20 years or more....
been carrying a pathetic bottle jack around and luckily never needed it, then yesterday one out of a vw crafter "fell" into my car. tried fitting a blind spot mirror..... best not bother there then.....(see mech/tech) fitted a 12v & 5v usb charger ran the van for ten mins, struggled to start though for some reason, gave up caring 'cos i was cold and grumpy came in and decided being lazy in the warm sounded more fun.
I've lazed around all day. Spent a couple of hours tonight tidying my garage. Its starting to look tidy now.
both great ... poppy looks like a right handful... a vid of our jacks , billy the long haired one is 15 .....
Had some good news today, as most of you know i changed jobs a few months ago so was unsure if i'd be able to store the van in my new warehouse over winter, heard today off the M.D. that the company insurers are fine with it as long as i'm insured and they have no liability if it's damaged in their building, happy days.
