The cost of the Fracking protests

  1. Personally I shop at Aldi and own a VW .................

  2. The planets battery is running low. The gas oil etc is only getting less and less. Trouble is this battery aint rechargable. All we are doing is flicking the switch on and off on a flat torch in the vain hope we ll get out of the dark woods before it dies completey.
Its all down to money. The £750 000 bil or whatever it is for well the Bill, is a tiny proportion for the returns involved.

    paradox and steveagain like this.
  3. Like snotty said. Energy companies don't "suspend" operations indefinitely while protests take place. Surry is a distraction for the fracking in the NW. Lots of investigative drilling an geology surveys happening here.

  4. The Times motoring supp. today, 2 page spread re cars running on this fuel > "fuel at home ! necc. techie machine ? between £2500 >£5000, and time to fuel?8 hours"cost of converting a petrol car ? £1500>>all interesting(I think)Voltswagen are well into vehicle production for this new fuel.

  5. I dont see what the fuss is about
a hole gets drilled how ever many miles deep, water and gas gets pumped in and the natural shale gas gets pumped out. We all get to use the gas to heat our homes and to use our cookers.
but it is ok to dig a mine shaft, send people under ground with drills and explosives to mine coal or whatever, have the mineshaft / vents collapse and peoples houses / gardens to disappear down into the mine or the poor sods working down there get stuck
people around here are protesting about hinkley point nuclear power station, but further up the road they are "saying no" to huntspill wind farm !!!

as far as i am concerned, all forms of extracting resources have risks, it just depends if you want it in your back yard

  6. Don't know much about the fracking lark, but as I understand it the company do not have a licence for fracking, they are just carrying out exploratory drilling, I know, if they find the right substrate then maybe fracking is next. Apparently this is carried out in the USA and they haven't all dies a violent death yet !. This was a local protest about the drilling but the media have stirring up a storm and now these professional protesters, who presumably have nothing better to do have descended on this sleepy village, and all the locals have left the protest as they fear anarchy.
You can bet your bottom dollar that what ever happens the tax payer will have to cough up either way.

They're test drilling for oil, not shale gas.
Cuadrilla are actually playing rent-a-mob brilliantly: temporarily halt some exploratory drilling near the "protest" whilst surging ahead oooop north with the actual fracking testing.

  8. And likewise the locals have left in fear of anarchy cos the media have stirred up a storm ,1st job of the tabloid media ,lacking a story/headline ? create one .Anyhow the undercover boys will be well in wiv the "professional protesters " so many young fertile single(misguided)females ,so little time...>until the book comes out.

  9. Renta Protest..........it will all blow over when Uni Starts / Teachers Holiday finishes...........I reckon Bastille will be playing there soon..........
At least until the HS2 protest starts up...........
I'd like to have time to pop down for a spot of free camping, but some of us have to work to help fill the countries coffers to allow them to do so............

  10. Pickey perhaps ,but no matter how much you or anyone works, no matter how much you contribute to this country's coffers it has nil bearing on anyone's right to protest/free camp,Protest, however distasteful to anyone, is an important part of fair Govt./"free "democracy,Fact, no society ever ,in history achieved great change without poplace protest. We simply chose our protests/those which we align ourselves with,> usually because funnily enough, we agree with the core value of said protesters.>everyone else is of course a "rent a mob".When the population become scared/cowed by their Govt all hope is lost>5 million people marched in opposition of a war ,we went to war, that scares me,Govt ministers lie and cheat and steal from us ,they are still in office and blah de blah de blah,we are stumbling towards a bar coded dystopian society of our own making, and yes that includes me.

  11. I'm quite looking forward to the inevitable Police Heavy Handed Tactics accusations...........perhaps the Egyptian Police might learn some lessons from our boys then.....
Speaking of which, thats a proper protest......not a nice cup of tea and a slice of cake protest over a few holes in the ground, but if thats all we can come up with......fair play to the 'swampies'........

And no-one has suggested it does....

  13. I used to work in and live near balcombe where one of the big protests against fracking is happening.

What's funny is the local parish council signed off the planning permission for it to happen with no research into it all.

Also - not sure of the details - but one of the parish counsellors was later 'employed' by the company doing the fracking as a consultant.

Makes you wonder what kind of back handers too place.

    Anyways ....

Again, they are looking for oil in Balcombe, they are not fracking.

  15. That may be true but the protest industry has to keep fracking in the public eye. Its current and must be good for raising subscriptions to the usual groups, whether or not its is relevant to the Balcombe campaign is largely immaterial.

Which is pretty much my point.
Most protestors probably haven't got the brains they were born with and actually have no idea what they're protesting about.

Lord Congi and Woodylubber like this.
  17. That's true - there are a lot of 'alternative' people in places like Brighton who just protest against anything ....

Most of whom don't know anything about what they are fighting against.

  18. I'm not against protesting per se.........far from it, just renta protestors....cos its cool and fashionable.
Perhaps they'd be better served popping over to Cairo, where democracy itself is under threat!..........:theforce:
    Now where's me bacon sandwich?...........

  19. The rent-a-protesters aren't really the problem: they're just Useful Idiots. It's the hardcore tired old Trots and anarchists who piggyback on to the back of this kind of stuff. You'd think these folk would find something useful to do with their lives.

Be interesting to see how the fracking turns out. I'd be quite willing to have them frack in the field next door (although I prob wouldn't like the noise and disruption in the early stages). Far better than useless wind farms (which I've signed a local petition against).

The real issue is, of course, that if it does does work out - and it may well not in the UK - readily available energy is going to set back the eco-nut agenda by years.
