Taking engine out and swapping 3 rib to a 6 rib gearbox

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Popsy, Mar 10, 2020.

  1. Hi All , I’m planning on taking my type 4 engine out , I’ve got a few jobs I want to do , which I will list below , any other suggestions while the engine is out ?
    1. Change gearbox to a 6 rib (have read that I need to change input shaft ?)
    2. Replace all fuel breather pipes and filler pipe
    3. Deal with rust and Respray engine bay
    4. Tart engine up a bit and maybe replace carbs ?
What other jobs would be good to do on the engine ? I keep having thoughts about a Subaru conversion
    Thanks

Surely if you already have a 2.0 type 4, the 6 rib box will be a straight forward fit unless someone has swapped it out already?

  5. It is tempting, maybe I should try to drive one , I remember going in Doug’s bus when Matt drove it when ha was thinking about going Subaru

If you like that engine I’d do it while you’re messing about taking stuff out and tidying the engine bay

  7. Ok , I see , so is it possible that the 3rib would of been converted to fit the type4 ? I’ve only read a little on the difference between the two , and not really sure of the difference !

Yep, the 3 rib does need modding for a type 4. I think you will be good to fit straight away.

You have most things covered in your to do list, I would add a couple:

repaint the tinware whilst your motor is out, neaten it up somewhat.

Check the condition of the clutch plate and also the seals on the ends of the crankshaft (one each end).

Check the condition of the needle roller bearing in the flywheel, should be fine - a simple clean and regrease should be all that's needed

  10. you don`t say what type 4 engine you have ? the 1700 had a 3 rib box ,
If you still have the 1700 the a 6 rib wouldn`t be the best move , if its a 2ltr then perfect …

  12. Hi Yes it’s a 2.0 litre , the previous owner had it fitted , so does that mean it was previously a 1.7 hence the 3rib ?

  13. Two each end (?).. might as well do the o rings while you're at it..

  14. ..and it's out so might as well whip those heads off and replace valves and guides , change the piston rings while they're easy to get at (..it was smoking a bit after all..), while it's apart that far, crack that case and re-do the main bearings, big ends too for good measure...poss regrind crank.. and that cam will be a litttle worn, get a new one and followers to match..... it's apart, might as well drill out those gallery plugs give it a good clean and re-plug them, that flywheel might be a bit polished give it a skim to re-fresh too, swivel feet rockers seem to be a sensible upgrade, .... oh hang on.... it was just a "cleaning it" job..... :)

  15. You won’t know until you get it out how the 3rib to type4 was done, the input shaft may have been changed or it’s possible the needle roller bearing had been moved from the end of the crank to the flywheel!
No problem either way, the the 6rib should go straight in but you need to check there’s a bearing in the end of the crank.
