Do these wheels take our vw hubcaps ?? if not just get a set of 15" Merc Steels, I think @Silver has got some for sale
If you put a wheel on the same hub with a bigger wheel offset, the wheel will sit further inside the wheel arch because the wheel's bolting face will have to move further in to meet the hub. Alternatively if it has a smaller wheel offset it will sit further out from the wheel arch. http://www.driverstechnology.co.uk/wheel-offset.htm
or some vw 15" steels. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271599906551?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
They'll have an offset of 45mm or 48mm or something if they are t4 or t5 wheels meaning you'd need to run spacersor they'll hit the spring plate. Centre hole needs opening up too to fit over front hub.
I get yer....I'm aiming to get back to near-as-damn-it stock with sligtly wider rims, so would still need a spacer, assuming there's enough clearance
@vanorak I picked up a couple of caddy 16"s to try out a couple of days go - they're 6x16 et50 so the outer edge will be pretty close to stock (what's 4mm between friends) and the inner will be 17mm reduced clearance, which i think should be ok? not got them on yet as i need the centres machined first. I'm pretty sure i'll be able to work out something to fix the oe hubcap in place too but not 100% sure how that's going to work yet. Wheel ideas.. by lotus-gt, on Flickr .. just resting in place for now: Wheel ideas.. by lotus-gt, on Flickr
Nice one Rob....I like the fact that they don't look too disimlar to stock....and a bit like 356's if you squint Would be good to know how you get on, handling and tyre choice wise..... You could try the hubcap clips they used on wide fives.....
@Moons has put 356 wheels on but fitted standard late hubcaps so it should work, @rob.e i think @whereuromnosecity has done the 16 inch passat wheel thing too.
@rickyrooo1 356's are going to be wide five though aren't they? I looked at passat steelss too - the b5 passat are 6.5 wide et42 which will put that rim in a similar place as the caddy's on the inside, but 10mm extra poke where the caddy wheel above is virtually as oe as its 1/2inch narrower - not much in it really but i think the caddy might be the better choice. i can't find anything definitive on the wheel load rating but i would guess that the caddy might have a higher rating (being a commercial vs passenger car?) The shape of the face of the caddy wheel also seems to suit the late hubcap, in that it sits nicely inside the "bowl" if you see what i mean.. there might other sized passat wheels though.. sharan might also be worth looking at. @whereuromnosecity any pics of your van? Edit: d'oh! brain fade, i've seen @whereuromnosecity 's thread already: http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/my-viking-resto.845/page-15
i picked up these 6x15 inch steel wheels (in green) but the hub caps just didn't look right , too near the holes in the rim and the hubcap stuck out too far
They look good Rob I'm seem to have been distracted of late with another project but still going down this root on the bay need but need to get another 2 rims, bought some decent hole cutters which i'll try to cut the middles out with, on my test rim a had the lip part of the hub hole removed which was plenty to fit over the hub nut etc
No. I got the centres bored but I haven't got them on the van yet - run out of money so no tyres I'll get on it after Xmas
Our local scrappy has hundreds of steel wheels though they are not sorted into makes so its a bit of a pain looking for a set of the same rims. Ebay germany is a great place for finding steel wheels as big audis and mercs seem to get spec'd with steels for some reason. 7" wide 15 and 16" seem easy to find.
