WANTED Swing Away Spare Wheel Carrier

Discussion in 'Late Bay Parts Classifieds' started by JenniC, Jan 24, 2015.

  1. This is from a policy from couple of yrs ago, plus its a specific classics policy, so most classic would have a spare.
But yeah some of it is daft and or common sense!

  2. BTW sorry for the threadjack, was just pointing it out for anyone who might not be aware of the levels of nonsense in insurance breakdown policy's!

  3. Was pondering this last night. If you have a tow bar then couldnt you modify a carrier to fit onto it. Difficult if its a swan kneck westy style but if its a two bolt style then it would be a straightforward mod I would think to remove the two parts on each side that wrap around the bumper and have a plate welded between and bolt it to the tow bar with longer bolts! Just a thought.

    swan neck westy one................

  5. We had the drop down Bluebird carrier on our last van. I had to remove the drop down bit whenever it went for work as it was a right pain to work in the engine bay with it on.

  6. Useless idea then! Back t't drwin board!

  7. My brother is a patrol team manager in the AA. He hates those drop down ones as they get in the way big time.

  8. @Merlin Cat any chance I could borrow yours to get copied or do @theBusmonkey already try that. Did it end up a bit pricey?

  9. There was a guy on eBay a couple of years ago who was making towbar mounted spare wheel carrier.

Edit: That is Ebay NOT prototype bay by the way!

  10. I would never use that Tyreweld stuff again or similar as if you squirt it in your tyre to get you out of danger / to a garage there are very few places (I couldn't find ANY in Newcastle) that will clean out your tyre and fix your puncture the old way which means for the £5 or those cans cost they cost you the price of a new tyre

I was gonna ask @Merlin Cat that, I can get them made nicely in high quality stainless a tig welded, if a few people want one it will be cheaper :)

  12. Its not a bad idea and although I wouldn't mind paying a decent price for a decent bit of kit price would still need to be right. In principle though , yes, I'm up for that but I possibly have someone to do them it's just prototyping that's the difficulty for me. I did like my bluebird one but it was a bit of a pain in the butt sometimes.

How much is a decent price? :)

  14. I'm not sure . To be honest I don't know how bluebird did his so cheaply as they actually weren't half bad. If it's a proper jobbie and looks the part.....

How much were the bluebird ones ?

  16. I paid less than a o. About 80 quid but hats a few years ago.

  17. The drop down bluebird one was £100 as I remember

  18. Possibly. If we're talkin stainless (which I'm not fussed about as think I'd prefer it painted stoked or similar.) then I'm guessing peeps will pay for it. Ideally I'd be happy at a ton tbh
