Suggestions for cleaning up inside the rear air intakes.

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by IZZYBAY, Apr 17, 2017.

  1. The rear air intakes get very grubby behind the grill and onto the breather pipes. Have tried to spray some paint in there but wondered if anyone has solved this problem. Thought about spraying black underseal in there but thought it would spoil the appearance. Have tried a stick with a cloth tied on this but not very effective.

Sounds familiar. I tried the same and just decided not to look in anymore

  3. cut down a toothbrush and apply paint stripper, use another cut down toothbrush to clean and some more for painting, tape brushes to something flexible like a stiff but flexible rod

  4. I welded extensions on wire brushes that fit through the vents and took it all back to bare metal then treated and painted it. Not sure what I'll do to keep them clean once on the road but I'm going to try as it does show up a nice clean van.[IMG][IMG][IMG]

You need to get a small child up the corners from the engine bay,it's the modern equivalent of chimney sweeps :D

This is a problem I think I need to face up to at some point!! It seems silly to blast a load of water in there with two batteries directly underneath!

  7. This rig seems to work a treat...

...bit of 21.5mm PVC pipe with a slit cut through it to slip over a Dremel flexi extension...

...firm enough to to get a good pressure on whatever tool being used...

...this was a minute with no cleaning agent, just a soft grade brush thingy attached
Just remember to turn the Dremel off before extracting it I didn’t and it caught the tails...luckily I didn’t have a grinder on it

  8. Exactly what I did,
Used a gloss roller, radiator roller handle & rustoleum to paint it!

Mask up each of the grills and all around it.
Then spray it like you'd spray anywhere just ignoring the grills.

  10. That is just what I did in the end but forgot about a few runs that had developed at the bottom of inside panel but a quick spray of inside colour hid those.

  11. I`m liking some of these solutions!

one of my petrol vent tubes has become detached in mine - has anyone worked out a way of re-attaching without cutting out the inside panel? would heat shrink work?

  12. where is it detached? Is the other side ok?

I think spraying under seal might drag in a chemical stink in the summer .

  15. Yes your right so I didn't do this but masked out all the air intake and sprayed inside with a rattle can of pastel white.

  16. It's come apart just above the bulb bit.
I was thinking I probably need to cut a hole out of the inside panel but I'm never going to be good enough to weld it to look nice!

  17. Do you have a picture?

@paradox managed to get his hand in on my to replace the rotten rubber hose where it attached to the bottom of the metal breather.

  19. It was me that pulled the crumbling old bit of hose off
The credit for fitting a new piece goes to @mikedjames the cracking chap that he is followed me round at techenders fixing faults I was finding for people on their vans.

It sounds like the poster has a snapped breather higher up
