Van is 2 litre CJ engine twin solex carbs. While driving it may judder as if someone is turning the ignition off and on, sometimes a few times rapidly, sometimes it dies for a second or so. I thought maybe ignition switch, it was new but it came in some parts so don't know brand, I ran a wire from + on battery to the coil and it didn't change anything so presume, points, condenser or coil. None are very old.
If it has points check the gap. also give all ignition wires a firm tug to see if any are loose. Check in the engine bay after dark for sparkly blue sparks from leads. Check rotor arm is good..swap it. Could be On my T1 the last fault was basically a choke wire shorting that cut the ignition for a moment.
Cheers @mikedjames i am going to swap to electronic distributor, also ordered new points and condenser that I will fit first but carry in van. HT leads are newish and decent ones. Its not a missfire its an off lol
No, pretty certain its low voltage ignition side. Twin carbs so if one was stuck it wouldn't kill it instantly.
I had a set of points do that once.. took ages to track it down as they were new, so didn't think it would be that... it was a partial break in the wire that connects to the condenser.
I did wonder on both, Ive sadly got about 7 coils here so will try one, also the points and condensor ,will test it them then will carry as a complete spare dizzy.
I was tidying up the workshop and looking for something the other day, started putting all the coils I found on one shelf, I've got 7 as well
Well i'am going to look on my bench ...and i think you will find i have got considerable more coils than you .
on my mgb, the points and condenser ignition gave up with a jolt and misfiring last week. It was a repeat of the same back in the summer. It turns out the repro condensers and points don't last five minutes. could they be Chinese by any chance? so out with the distributor, chuck points and condenser, fit new ones yet again, set points gap, put distributor back and the engine runs perfect.
I bought a new Accuspark Dissy electronic ignition, as a Guinea pig as its complete there can be no didnt use the paste bla bla. My J and R CV joints have done 800 miles + 6 months still looking good, £13.99 each complete joint. the JK ones rotted on the shaft. I like to test cheap things lol
I have fitted new dizzy complete, timing at 28 degrees when revved with vacuum disconnected and plugged, . But it drops down to 2 degrees when ticking over. Bit slow isn't it ? I predict a flat spot ! If I up it at tickover it will be too high at the upper end !!! Note the choke wire has now been tightened
I would time it at 30 Max advance and not worry too much about the idle timing. Them dissys are a bit inconsistent.. adjust the idle speed if needed.
