I'm just reseaching at the moment.. I was under the impression that the best gear box to fit to a subaru was a 6 rib 091 box but there's a guy on ebay selling one because he's done a scoobie conversion? So which box is best? (1973 type 2 - ej20 non turbo subaru) Hope you can help
its the 6 rib box you need fella as the ribs give the box the strength required. As Ricky said though, Baybirmingham has done the convert as did Baydreams! Plus search Fellows Speedshop on facebook for info too
I know what you mean, I must admit to being interested myself for our '73. Maybe in 2014 I'll see what it entails & see how work is & take a view then on doing the conversion ;D
i'd rather go diesel but i would love any improvement in mpg, alas i doubt conversion with my auto box is valid, good luck on your quest, also whereyoufromnosecity off here is doing this conversion himself so he may help with info
Go for the 091 if you can find one. It's not only a stronger box but it also has a slightly higher 4th gear ratio.
Just to add, Type 25 DK box's 2.0 Aircooled) are slightly easier and cheaper to get hold of, and have the same gearing as an 091 6 rib, but you'll need to sort a new mount and fab a linkage - ideally a cableshift as the selector is on the side of the nosecone rather than end on. Or if you've got the best part of 2k, the best box is as Paul has said a late 70's 915.
I'm sure you've seen the sites already, but read up everything on the RJES site and the Subaru section on the VWKD site. There's a wealth of info on them.
subaru convesion 2 ltr ejt 20 with 6 rib box i got all my information from rjes and vwkd site the conversion is straight forward enough if you buy most of the gear from rjes i bought my engine from scooby split and this came with all the wiring harness imbolerliser key i then got exhaust bell housing fuel pump clutch brackets etc from rjes i only had to make a minor aleration to the chasis for the starter motor to fit i allso had to have my petrol tank fitted with a inlet pipe cost about 30 quid ive used a rad fitted under the belly of the van with a scoop and two fans fitted biggest problem we had was sorting the wiring loom out but rjes will even sell u a loom if required i fitted mine with me brother in law took about a week in total then i drove 3500 miles around spain with no problems my girlfriend drives it everyday with no problems and she says its cheaper on fuel we have now fitted a heater in the van. its nice and warm as we drive up hills without problems now the exhaust i got from rjes sounds amazing especialy in the tunnells
Go and see the guys at fellows, only just outside brum, really helpful and will talk you though all you need know
