stiff window winders

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Diddymen, Jan 14, 2013.

  1. I've just finished rebuilding my cab doors

fitted every thing new seals and channel felt etc, but the window is stiff to wind up

I cleaned and regreased the winder mech....was moving nice and freely with the glass in.....but when I put the felt channels in it was much stiffer

I've tried adjusting where the glass sits in the mechanism and it hasnt made any difference :( the felt all seems to be in firmly

.....any tips or tricks to getting it to work smoothly or is it a matter of it will get easier in time?

I dont want to squirt oil of WD40 down the channels if it can be helped

any help as always much appreciated :)

  2. if you look at the door, you can adjust the glass in its closed position... try cracking off the bolts, then tighten them up again...

failing that, I've used a aerosol silicon based lubricant with good results before!! Sometimes those felts are pretty darn stiff!!

  3. thanks mate :)

I did try adjusting through the 2 holes at the top of the door......but I'll give it another go before reaching for the lube ;D

at least its not me doing some thing wrong! .....silicone lube sounds a good idea...much better than WD40

When the window is half up, will it waggle? You remember that screw at the top of the quarterlight? Did you drill your own hole?

  6. window glass wont waggle on either door ....and it is about half way up is gets tighter

I drilled a hole at the top of the 1/4 light for the drivers side but not the passangers side....that fitted in the existing hole

but the passangers side seems to be a bit tighter than the other side :headscratch2:

It was just a thought - you do have to ram them forwards hard to get to the right hole...

  8. I found it strange how much easier the passenger side one went in!!

the drivers side wouldnt go any further, I tried a bit of wood and a hammer, hanging off it .....I even tried a soft jawed spreader between the opening and it wouldnd shift.....in the end it was about 2mm short of where I think the hole was (judging by comparing the other side)

I'll have another fiddle with the door glass, might try to take the screw out and push the drivers 1/4 light a bit more now it has probably settled a bit.....if not I'll get the lube out ;D

    thanks guys :)

  9. stiff window winders ... nah just weak arms :))

  10. I used some ptfe spray from hellfrauds on the channels which helped

    Cheers
