To be honest, I'm surprised we have got this far into a "stench pipe" thread without an appearance from Bazza... is he OK?

I don’t know but possibly they are. I know here we are not permitted to join rainwater with sewage drains, but that’s in France, and we have a septic tank.:)

If there is a blockage in the sewer and it's raining all day might the water exit out into loo floor or bathroom ..and if it's upstairs  It's unlikely to happen but it's possible .

  13. I’m surprised they can do it here. You’d think with everyone’s runoff, it would overload the sewers.

  14. Probably best to divert it into your neighbour's pipework.

It’s not illegal to run rainwater into the sewer, but the other way round. It is frowned upon a bit, but the water companies do it themselves to a certain extent to keep the flow of the sewage, so a little bit hypocritical.

I doubt if it’s allowed there, although perhaps it depends on the local authority. I thought surface and foul water had been separated 50 years ago or so to avoid overloading the sewers but I’ve never seen anyone going around checking and I’m not about to volunteer for the job. Looking after our septic tanks is bad enough, it holds 3000 litres and that’s a lot of s***.

  17. Seems our Southern Water allow it, and I pay them for the privilege.

Yes I am but it looks as though I shouldn’t put rain run off water into the sewage system just in case the sewage system gets overwhelmed and floods which is fair enough.

Yorkshire Water charge us for rainwater treatment so they expect it to go down the sewer. If you can prove it doesn't, you can get a rebate.

  20. Same as Southern.

TBH if it’s only one roof and the rest is soakaway, noone’s ever going to know/check.
