Steering column not sitting right

  1. Just bolted my column back to the dash but I have this big gap.

    Any idea what's stopping it?

  2. although we have diff year campers ,Oscar ,mine has similar space ,just had mine in bits earlier today ,deffo no gap there before you stripped it ?does it feel like its sitting secure /ok ?

  3. It feels secure but its deffo not where it should be as the horn contacts are nowhere near touching the bottom of the steering wheel.

  4. Is there a hole in the cowling that you can see a socket head bolt through?? Try undoing (loosening) that, and gently wiggle the ignition housing up!!

I've seen this on a few vans, but never really looked further than tweaking the horn contacts!!

  5. Have you changed the coupler at the bottom of the column? On later, this supports the whole column. Are the top mountings bent?

The gap should be about 2-3mm, or your indicators won't self-cancel. If everything's right elsewhere, do as Paul says and loosen the switch clamp (may have to replace the shear-head bolt) and shove the whole switch casting up the outer column a bit.

  6. All I did was remove these two bolts. [IMG]
One either side of the column. Have now put them back and left with this gap. Just tried what Paul suggested but the housing won't budge.

  7. check that the plastic collar at the bottom of the tube is sat right :)

  8. This is what I have.

It feels like something inside the column itself is holding it off. Will have to dismantle and have a look see. Just need to get a big enough socket for the steering wheel nut now.
    Cheers for the advice. :)

  9. it'll either be 24 or 27mm

  10. Mine was like this when I got it, but it had a shear bolt in the cowling, presumably to slow down anybody trying to overcome the steering lock, but it had been tightened up in the wrong position. I had to drill it and fit a stud extractor (I actually banged in the tang of a file) to remove it then after sliding up the mechanism I fitted a cap screw.

Is it the washer about 3/4 of the way up that needs replacing to get the horn working properly?

  12. I've got a similar sized gap, but my horn contact does connect (almost all the time). Interesting comment about indicators not cancelling. That'll be why mine don't cancel then!

  13. does your steering lock still work. try putting the key in and starting the engine to ensure lock is away from column then try moving everything back to where it should be. I had this problem with a beetle column.

  14. It will :).

The shear head bolt can be removed with a small screw extractor down the hole. Replace it with an allen head bolt. It's this screw that clamps the ignition switch casting to the outer column.
