Steering box boring update with question

  1. Yep, took mine off and fitted a new with the arms attatched

  2. ^^ as above ^^ It looks as if it shouldn't but it does. :)

  3. Great one.
At the mo I have all four plate bolts undone, the facing bolt do the top of the steering gear undone. I was stuck yesterday when the box wouldn't come away from that top bolt on the gear, the swcuring bolt, then I ran out of light. My main issue is with the steering wheel moving around as I'm trying to undo stuff, I don't think the steering lock works.

  4. Worth loosening the drop arm nut while the box is still in the van.

  5. The bolt on the pitman arm? If so then I took that off.

  6. Yep.

  7. Yes that's off mate. Most bolts off easy so far apart from the top gear bolt, steering wheel moving around is a pain!

  8. Are you undo the coupling bolts?

I don’t know what the ‘top gear bolt’ is but I think he’s undoing the coupling flange (item 14) from the steering box but I’m not sure the coupling will come off the box unless the column is lifted – but I’ve never done it that way. Easier to remove the two lower coupling bolts IMO.

  10. Yep, undo two coupler bolts and you're done.

That’s ^ for you @14platoon Mine doesn’t have the rubber coupling or bolts.

  12. Well box is out, I just needed to be a bit brutal and push the steering column up! The steering box came out really easy, contrary to what I was expecting, the job do far has been pretty good. What could possibly go wrongo_O
I changed the steering coupler while I was there but didn't get around to putting my new steering box on, I smashed my lead lamp bulb.
Now I have kept everything pretty much where it is but I can see that my second hand box and my old one, don't line up with each other when I orientate them side by side. The pitman arms are at different angles. I'm guessing that I keep my wheels and steering wheel straight, find the centre of the new steering box, then put everything back on?
Ps this is my old coupler

  13. Wire brush the arms and the end of the steering box shaft. From memory, the shaft will have a line on the end, the arm with have "L" and "R" markings on (left- and right-hand drive). You need to make sure that the line is pointing to the right marking, or odd things will happen. I've got a pic somewhere, will try and find it.

  14. Nice one. I'll wait for you to dig it out.

  15. I might have lost it! Haynes mentions it.

  16. Ok no worries. I'll have a look. Cheers for your input so far, might not have tackled it without the advice.

  17. Yep,remembered 100% correctly :)

  18. Now while I'm here is it worth restoring the horn?
Currently my horn is off a dash switch and not easy to get to, the old horn wire runs through the steering column to this
    [IMG]

And the horn has one wire only and a missing terminal. The wire from the column does not go to the horn at all? How do I restore it to original?

It's a funny angle but there is a purple wire attached to the right horn terminal but nothing on the left terminal as it has been broken off.

  19. It's always worth getting your horn button working properly.

  20. Is this the tab for earth shown to the bottom of the photo?
