Im going to fit a new steering box on my 1974 1800cc bus. I read a lot of nightmare stories for getting the drop link arm off! I'm intending to replace the box itself but also have another new drop link arm. As I'm not worried about damaging these old items, what's the best way to get them off the bus or can it just unbolt off as one? Cheers.
Later Bays, you can just unbolt the box and pass it through the frame with the arm attached. Not sure if it's the case with earlier ones.
Try it and see. Pop the drag link, undo the mount bolts and see if you can wiggle it through the frame.
Will give it a go. I take it you mean pop the drag link arm from the drag link then try to feed it through? Cheers
I did this at the weekend. Little bit tricky I had to try the plate in a couple of positions before it came off then the box just slipped out. The arm on the out put shaft took a big set of pullers and heat to get it to pop off.
I think he does! We've had the steering arm cherry red, box in the vice, with big set of pullers & bfh. Even cut them off when being replaced!
Yeah the arm which links into the steering arm ball joint. Getting it off of the output shaft was difficult.
