Starter solenoid problems . . .

  1. hello,
while rewiring my bus today i tried reattaching the cables to the starter solenoid, however the +stud just rotates, meaning i cant get it tight i managed to get the cables and nut about half way on before it started spinning, so i couldn't get the nut off either . . .
I've not managed to find a diagram for the solenoid, so im unsure weather or not it's fixable. if i take off the starter and remove the solenoid can it be stripped down and fixed?, or does it sound finished?
has anyone done this that could offer some advice? or is there a fix that wont involve removal?
or can anyone suggest a place that could sell me a solenoid?

On the plus side all the other electrics (lights, indicators, horn, wipers etc) are working perfectly . .

  2. sorry i should add it's a 1978 2.0L

  3. I've just had my starter motor overhauled by my local auto electrician company, as part of my restoration.
They fitted a new solenoid which cost 15 pounds, which I think is money well spent.

try cleaning the thread up with a wire brush and using a spring washer under the nut

  5. the plastic cap on the solinoid will be broken internally... so a bit of a pain, but you can fix it if you have access to a soldering iron and some leaded solder!!

  6. i have in desperate moments, jammed the bolt you refer to with a small screwdriver to "lock "it, and got nut to lock up. On my own bus the solonoid cannot be split and reassembled easily (or at all without some special tool/knowledge of same?) ive tried . Megabug had one to sell(me) ,may be worth a call?

  7. Had same problem. Got a replacement solenoid from Volksgood.

  8. thanks for all the help.. im going to have a go at taking it apart and fixing it at the weekend, if it's finished i'll try Volksgood or megabug thanks
