Special washer???

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Busman, Dec 15, 2012.

  1. Just rebuilding my front beam and the manual says use the special washer for the top ball joint when tightening nut on steering knuckle. WHAT SPECIAL WASHER??? any help please......

  2. The concentric bush / washer for setting the camber? Only thing that comes to mind with the upper ball joint.

  3. He could be right... :)

There's a washer on early's that holds a bracket in place that supports the flexi brake pipe. It's special. Maybe they mean that.
On lates it's same but bracket supports end of flexi/start of solid to the caliper. Same special washer.

  5. Not the eccentric, thats fitted and pointing forwards as instructed. I have fitted the brake pipe support bracket and a normal washer. Its just the manual terms the washer for the top ball joint as special ???? I just wondered if I had miss something, I have managed to find the old washers and they look like normal washers. If you guys don't know i take that as a good sign.

  6. I have just checked VW heritage and they list a top ball joint washer at £3.90. and it looks like a normal washer, whats that all about ????

  8. I think you need to be special to pay it... :p

  9. it is a special washer... around 40mm in diameter and approx 4mm thick... you'll need it to stop the eccentric camber adjuster falling out when you go over a bump

  11. Paul you are wiz with these things, but I'm confused, the eccentric bush is tapered, so how can it fall out if bolted in? Please forgive my ignorance.

It's a sort of top-hat style washer that also centralises the bracket.

And this is the top ball joint washer curtesy of vw heritage. Is this a normal washer..???

  14. no, as I said, it is a custom size... the nut is 27mm, and without the washer, the eccentric camber adjuster would pull straight out of the hub...

balljoint, goes into the camber adjuster, then into the hub... no washer, and there is very little the the nut pulls down onto... the washer correctly spreads the load between the nut and the hub...

Here's a pic... it's a transporterhaus install, but the assembly is the same, just upside down!!
