Solex carbs about to be launched out the window!

  1. Please can someone guide me in this difficult journey.

I'm on the 3rd solex carb with my van and this ones still rubbish. All three have given rubbish performance in various areas. Mainly idle and pulling away. I'm of the understanding that the new aftermarket copies are to be avoided but after 3 originals I'm really tempted to try one of these specials.

Does anyone know where the best place to source a reliable solex pict 34 from or is there a much better solution for a std setup perhaps for a few more £££.

Any words of wisdom greatly appreciated cos I'm rapidly losing my patients.

  2. Never used them, every bus and bug I've had always had Weber(s) on it.
They're good and once set, they're set.

If you're a doctor it's not good for business to admit to rapidly loosing your patients. ;)
What distributor? Pict carb and non-vac dizzy don't work well together behaving as you describe.

  4. Hi Zed! It's a 009 I believe. Would a weber 34 ICT work well with it?

  5. Just realised the word was wrong. Not sure I can blame the spell checker for that one :)

  6. Cheaper to change the distributor

  7. There's no real reason why a well-scrubbed, cleaned and properly set up Solex should give you problems. Have the ones you've been using been given a good going over?

What kind of poor performance have you been having? Poor idle, for example, can be many things.

Agreed, try a £45 electronic SVDA off Ebay, you already have 3 carbs. Never seen a bus with a single ICT. I do enjoy predictive text amusement. :)

  9. 009s are meant for static engines and some fords...

They should never have found their way onto camper engines!! :(

  10. As it happens the garage misunderstood my question and it is an svda distributor so I've just bought a new pict 34 from aircooled. Didn't want to risk another failed refurb. Let's see what happens. Fingers x'd lol

  11. Apart from the Marmitety original one on the van I've had 2 that were supposed to have been refurbed. Both were ok when cold but a right git to get the van going when warm. Having to rev loads to pull away. I thought perhaps this was symptomatic of a tired engine. The engine was very tired and has been rebuilt now but the carb is still doing the same. To be homes for the sake of a few quid I've elected to but a new one on and not chance another used one. Will see what happens.

  12. If you`re running a 009 try advancing the accelerator pump quadrant to give maximum `squirt` - worked for me
009 takes a bit of stick on the forums but never had a problem with mine after i reset the pump stroke ..

    :hattip:

Edit .... beat me to it - might help someone so i`ll leave the post ..

Has this van ever gone ok while you've owned it?
Have you replaced the spark plugs? They are ALWAYS undergapped from the packet
Plugs again, almost all T1 heads take short reach plugs, but not all. Gutless when the spark happens up the plug hole. pulling off as you describe, poor acceleration in 4th, poor top speed but it'll get there eventually. Remove plug, run a bent piece of wire up the plug hole counting the threads. 8 for short, 13 for long or thereabouts.

And I read on your thread you've had a top end rebuild. Tis some of the new heads that need the longer plugs. ;)

  15. To be honest zed it's always run poorly for one reason or another. As I didn't have any of it's history then it was a case of trying so many things. The engine defo needed doing, some of the cylinders barely made 5 bars and we're not holding.

The issue was mainly trying to do anything at low revs. Once the revs were up it had plenty of go.

The garage have dealt with it all this winter cos my job is manic. They seem to have all in order now. I saw it running Saturday all be it with its original carb. They are confident that the new one will sort it. It will be back on the rolling road and sweet hopefully.

Hope it's sorted now then. :)

  17. How would I fit a vac dizzy on an injun with dells or webers, can't find vac ports on either?
    :)

Edit, although I have 2 small brass pipes coming out of each side of the dells which are just blocked off with rubber tube, are these the vac ports?
    :)

  18. Cheers zed. It will be nice to get a good runner to start with. Maybe then when things are wrong I can tell instead of never knowing good :)

  20. There should be one vac port on one dell ,depending what they came off
