Soft southern so and so

  1. I heard there has been a nesting pair the last few summers. My bird watching now focuses on Bough Beech reservoir near Penshurst as I can park the van there and its not too far from home. Plenty to see at Bough Beech including red kites and peregrines and resident viewable barn owls plus a big variety of ducks, geese and waders. See a kingfisher there most visits. Bird watching is a great outdoor hobby and the resident twitchers there are a friendly bunch. I got a cheap canon dslr last year and my sister in law gave me my late brother's nice opticron scope and tripod which was much appreciated.

Great looking birds you’ve got there
But seriously I was never into birdwatching since being an young RSPB member as kid, my Dad being a bit of an enthusiast. Only got into it a little lately as I see a fair bit out on my mountain bike every week.
Living a mile - if that - from Ardingly reservoir I just ride my bike there and the surrounding forest and fields.
That and out on rides or walks at Cuckmere Haven. Trouble is, unless I remember to take a camera I don’t spend too long looking, but it’s mostly Heron and the usual terns ducks and swans with a few egrets, cormorants and grebes.
Haven’t seen a kingfisher for decades. I’m just not patient or prepared for waiting it out.

Used to commute through Penshurst and never looked up Bough Beech. Ridden round Bewl a few times.

  8. @Gingerbus I learned to sail at Ardingly reservoir some years back in a nice Wayfarer. Great place to live around there. Bluebell Railway is close by and I go there a few times a year. Penshurst and Bough Beech are popular with weekend cyclists, don't know why its all hills round that way.
