Nothing at all from school, hated the place, always in trouble for bunking off and getting the cane. I was chucked out at 15 so I went to the local college and did a years Engineering course then A level Physics and Maths followed by a Degree and finally a Masters Degree. I couldn't care less what people get at school, it's what they do afterwards that counts. How many people get tons of GCSE's and then collect trolleys at Tescos?
I was the opposite, only got a few CSE’s and worked for a local farmer. Was a good year doing that, didn’t learn much but the farmer tought us how to graft. In later working years I got my qualifications (HNC and Engineering Degree) and got me to where I am today with some rewarding projects under my belt.
I got a 50 yard swimming certificate and my gold survival swimming badge, if I ever fall in the sea in my pyjamas I'll be ok
Always handy for recovering rubber bricks accidentally dropped in swimming pools too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
GCSEs: 6 As, 4 Bs, 2 Cs A levels: 2 As, B and a C 1st in Maths. And the ever important gold D of E! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Cycling proficiency 2 b’s 4 c’s at gcse D and a U at a level AdvGNVQ at uni before dropping out of the degree. Worked my way up from kitchen assistant to GM of a chain of restaurants. Retrained as a carpenter in my spare time, quit and set up a carpentry business. Married a high flying business woman, had kids, sold the carpentry business, bought a bay, became a house husband. #livingthedreamsorrynotsorry
Not really true. The grades you get will determine which university and course you get on. Some universities will sometimes accept people who have not quite made their offer grade depending on the course and the candidate, but you're not going to get anywhere near a top course at a Russell Group university if you are getting Bs and Cs. Whether people like it or not, there is a hierarchy and studying medicine at UCL is going to be for the A*/A candidates, whereas Sport Science at Wolverhampton is not...
GCE O levels for me too. Maths, English, Woodwork and Technical Drawing. Grade 1 pass in the TD. They were all in 5th year. As I went to a Secondry Modern school (for 11 plus failures) we were the first ones to go on to 5th year and do GCE’s. In 4th year we did UEI (Union of Education Institutes) and also SSC (Secondary School Certificate)
I didn't turn up much in the last year of school, and didn't bother turning up for many exams either... It didn't matter though, I was 16, rebellious, and was in a band, so I was going to be a rock star. Fortunately, I had already got a job as a trainee mechanic at the local Ford garage, just in case the rock star thing didn't work out...
There is a growing trend by a big proportion of Unis, to offer a Conditional Unconditional Offer, which the Unis make before the A level results come out. What they seem to be doing is offering a place not dependent on A level grades, provided the student signs up with them and so the Uni gets guaranteed fee income. It does not seem right and apparently has taken the pressure off students as they are guaranteed a place so don't have to stress over getting high grades. On the face of it, it seems to be a form of pressure selling and time will tell if someone comes up and says its illegal. Meanwhile students are getting into Uni and that can only be a good thing, we don't want to see Uni places going to the elite few. As pointed out, the top Unis would always want the best students and getting the entrance grades are a must and they don't practise the Unconditional offers.
I did fairly well at school etc, GCSEs, 5 A’s, 4 B’s A levels, 3 B’s Maths/Chemistry/Biology, D in Geology and a U in Economics! Degree - 2.1 in Environmental Science from Leeds - (the proper uni!) City & Guilds NVQ Level 3, Vehicle Body Repair and Paint, Now into loads of work related courses, all Overhead Line Electrics, (CDM) construction/design/management regulations etc Thinking of doing a rail engineering degree with work, as think I’ll be able to swing loads of time off with pay! The degree has really helped me though... I actually didn’t disclose I had a degree when applying for the job I’m in now! Think the main pre-requisite was willingness to work at height in all weathers, and carry all the old boys who do as little as a possible!
