  1. D4283595-1D92-4D53-AD7C-C70D41DEAC91.jpeg I Need to change the small end bushes in my rods. I can press the old ones out & new ones in on the press at work. Question is getting them reamed. Is it something most machine shops can carry out? I haven’t decided on make of new pistons yet so i don’t have new gudgeon pins yet. I have got some gudgeon pins which have done very little work from a set of 1.8 AA pistons. Do you think it is ok to use one of these for clearance?

  6. So on a serious note do i go Mahle bushes or KS? The KS are about a tenner more, any preference on quality?

Im not sure if we used KS or Silverline in our 1915 motor; which ever we used reamed up fine with a good fit to the pin :)

There’s probably not a significant difference between Kolbenschmidt and Mayle, apart from the price.

Because the bushes are reamed, all you need is a machine shop who does it straight.

  14. ^this. Get them in and reamed absolutely square with the big ends.

  15. Thanks for the replies. My local machinist is retiring next year and has just sold his rod reaming and realignment machine 2 weeks ago. Just my luck.
Have found an alternative shop who can do it not far away though. Happy days.

  16. Lucky! Good manual machinists seem to be a dying breed.

Manual reaming seams to be a dying art these days.

  18. So went for a set of reconditioned rods from Stateside. They look the biz. However the gudgeon pin is a tight fit in 2 of them & is reluctant to turn. Should I lightly rub down the bushes with some 400 wet & dry? Or should I return them?

You’ll never keep the small end round with wet & dry. If the pin is a nice fit in the piston, I’d send them back. Are all the pins exactly the same diameter?
