Silly questions you're afraid to ask about your bay

You're too sensitive.

I play a game with some of my customers (when I've got to know them) called "Point to the Carburettor". I only play the game with people who I suspect haven't done more than glance in the engine bay then shut the lid quick. The odds are with me - none of them know. Then I ask their wives, who often do know quite a lot, but have been keeping quiet because it's man's stuff. Whoever wins I explain things to them.

What does this mean?

 

My air filter is bound to be all full of crud and oil by now, and probably isn't letting as much air through as it should.

Do I have to buy a new one, or can I clean it (and, if so, how)?

 

Unless you have a paper element filter Malc.
In which case replace it... You may be surprised to find it's quite clean still.
