Silly idea or free cooling

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by nell, Aug 6, 2019.

  1. Has anyone made an air scoop that directs air to a spin on oil filter??
My filter is on the bus just dangling in the wind.
Would an air ram/scoop directed at the filter drop the temp??
    You ideas are welcome

Theoretically yes, but by an insignificant amount, if you want to cool the oil fit an oil cooler.

  3. Dangling in the wind will give all the cooling that's possible with a...dangling in the wind oil filter.

Spend £40 on a volute/velocity ring for your fan shroud (as recommended/used by VW)...

  4. Did someone like CB or burg make an ally heatsink that the filter sat in I'm sure I've seen one before. It had fins to dissipate the heat faster

Much better with some of those plastic air vent ears ! ( said tongue in cheek. )

Yes, but that’s not the same as wafting air across a spin on filter.

  8. Plastic tat where do I sign up ;)

  9. Yup the ally/metal pulls the heat out And the fins have more surface area I sure I've seen them but not for a while

Those plastic air vent ears won’t cool the oil, or anything else, but the addition drag will increase the load on the engine, burn more fuel and generate more heat. (Said tongue in cheek.)

    Alloy finned larger sump ?

  13. Do you need to drop the oil temperature? What temp is it running at the moment on a motorway run?
I fitted the type 4 sized oil cooler into the fanhousing after modifying the doghouse bit and fitted an external filter at the same time and saw a big drop in temperatures.

  14. Got one. Extra oil always helps

  16. So back on topic where have people put the filter on the cross member above the heat exchanger. Or tucked into rear wheel well at the back. Where have you put your dangaly bit

  17. Tucked under the rear corner. I’ll post a pic later.

  19. The same drag as having the 1/4 light windows wide open?, have five of them on my van!

  20. Was thinking that how did you fox it
