Colour coded kitchen drawers so me and the "vulnerable" Mrs can avoid transfering any notional viral doodads

This evening's walkies and only met one other dog walker. We've got serious lockdown conditions here with police checks.

How does this grow like this....does the core die and that’s new growth or is it a parasite to the tree?

  11. Probably been nibbled by rabbits or sheep, mind you grey squirrels can make a right mess too. Anyhow there was a breach of the bark and cambium layers, now they're the defensive layers that keep out pathogens, thus the rot to the side. If it was in the centre surrounded by healthy growth that'd more or less normal for an ageing tree.
BTW, numptey with a strimmer would do the same damage and a very low branch in this case, being removed badly, one way or another.
Just had a closer look, damage has occurred above a node (where a branch may sprout from) what this does is cuts off the water/nutrient supply to higher up the tree. This is all diverted into the node area that is rich in growth hormones, so Boom a mass of reaction growth and over time the tree has grown around them a bit too.

Wow, thank you for that answer, genuinely interesting!

It’s a section of trunk I’ve found in the garden, am assuming it’s something that been taken down in the past....I’ll have a look to see if there are any other sections.
