F-ing kitchen fitters strike again. May not be obvious what’s going on here to a non gas engineer so let me explain. I was called out to this very old ideal Boiler. This is a young family who’s boiler isn’t working. I suspect it’s a thermocouple which is a simple and cheap fix.

They have just had a new kitchen fitted, and not a cheap one either.. this boiler is accessed by undoing a wing nut on the back in each cover. The stupid kitchen fitters have jammed the cupboard side hard up against the boiler meaning access to the wing nuts is impossible. Meaning no boiler repair, meaning no hot water or heating. Add to that the fact this appliance gets hot and the instructions clearly state that there needs to be a gap all around it for air flow, so ramming wood combustible wood against it might not be too clever. Plus the instructions also state that if the appliance is in a cupboard then the cupboard needs hi and low ventilation for cooling, these clowns fitted a solid door.

For good measure they have also fitted overhead cupboards right up to the range cooker, ignoring the requirement for nothing to over hang a cooker by 50mm at the side.

What really pees me off is that I don’t wander round with every boiler manual on my van. I just googled the boiler from the sticker on the front and downloaded the info in 30 secs.

Seems to me every other trade I come across apart from electricians get away with doing whatever they like. builders give me the right hump.

  3. Might the boiler gave been running smoky as a result of the lack of clean air and "smoked" the thermocouple? Either way they are very lucky it didn't cause a fire or produce CO.

It’s the plumbers fault for putting the boiler in the wrong place all those years ago.

Wonder if they can get the kitchen fitters to put these faults right if they’ve, essentially, left it in a dangerous condition.

  7. Good luck with that.

I agree they are muppets. You would imagine that if that is their profession they should learn about the requirements of other appliances that their kitchen fittings affect.

I get v irritated when I have to take a cupboard apart to access a boiler as I can’t get the casing off.

Surprised but not shocked. We rarely fit kitchens but still know about required distances for certain appliances.
Your average designer at B&Q will tell you - then design it so it doesn't fit.
