Seized caliper bolts

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by dubmeister, Oct 19, 2013.

  1. As part of a front brakes overhaul on my '74 t2 Devon, I'm trying to free off the 2 bolts that secure the caliper in place, without much luck, I've tried penetrating fluid, heat (although not much heat), just warmed the caliper really,I've been hanging off it with a socket and a spanner, my hands are now scraped and blistered, I'm now thinking of using a battery impact gun, but worry about shearing the head off the bolt, anyone any other ideas
    Thanks

Soak them in penetrating fluid for a while, have a fag and a cuppa then hit the heads with a couple of sharp taps of a hammer. try the bar again.

Best I can do, works for me!

  3. Don't worry you won't shear the heads off. If you have a ring spanner and a lump hammer they should give in. Never used a battery impact gun but worth a go.

  4. Get a 2 or 3 foot breaker bar on them. They're fairly hefty, so they won't snap.

Breaker bar or spanner and hammer. They're tight but not that tight. A rattle gun should run them out easily.

  6. And do them up to 90-100 lb/ft (from memory) when you stick them back on again...

  7. Thanks for the advice folks, I'm gonna leave it over the weekend, then try again come Monday, I've sourced a breaker bar and an impact wrench, thanks for the torque settings Snotty, will post back up when I get them off:thumbsup:

  8. every time you brake it seem to tighten these bolts up ,the bolts will be in very good condition ie no rust but just extremely tight..

To get a breaker bar on them you might have to change your position 20 times...be careful.

  9. Caliper bolts are 12.8 hardness, so very unlikely that they would shear!! I often put the steering on lock so the caliper is sticking out, and get the 3ft breaker bar on them... they soon pop undone!!

  10. Are you turning them the right way?

  11. I took my van to the local garage and asked them to undo them with the rattle gun then do them up again not so tight so I could go home and undo them again if you see what I mean?!

I still needed a long bar on the end of my socket set though

  12. Got them off ................. used a heating torch (same as the plumbers use for soldering copper fittings), heated the bolt head for about 3mins, came off quite easily after that, and I managed to pop the caliper pistons out using a bike pump......that's got to be a first!!!!!!!, thanks to everyone for the help and advice, a bit of advice for anyone else attempting this caliper overhaul, be very careful when attempting to remove the pistons using compressed air, they usually come out with some considerable force, one of mine popped out and shot about 10 feet in the air, I had the presence of mind to keep my face out of the way, would have been painful if it had hit me !!!
