Sweet! ... even if it does mean that I have to do valves points and timing first
Maybe I should send a thank you letter to my friend down in Wiltshire for forcing me into having to save money by learning all this for myself!

  4. If I was getting 30mpg I would leave well alone :) They are all a bit sooty when cold, I think the short exhaust making condensation quick makes it look worse.

  5. Could also be your automatic choke not opening fully. Check that first.

Ah, well, the link @Baysearcher posted says "valves, points, timimg, choke, before carbs" so ........
Going to get my brother-in-law to take me through the lot now :)

  7. For a Cali import, check you even have a choke still. Also check that the thermostat (next to the pushrod tubes on the right side) and fan baffles are still there (they aren’t). Also I’ll bet your air cleaner isn’t properly set up—I can see the fuel vapour hose is not hooked up at least, but that’s mostly for emissions. It’s an ėarly bay, though, so user experience may vary.

  9. Oh, sorry, and these are just general things Californians take off their vans, not necessarily a cure for your problem.

  10. Good things to do...but won’t have any effect on your running rich ;)

Realised that but need to happen first if I've understood it right ...
@CuppaT2 given plenty of food for thought ...
    Brother-in-Law all lined up

  12. You need to get a manifold with heat risers
It makes a massive difference to the fuelling as it helps the air fuel mix stay in vapour form

Nice looking bus, engine looks to be recently worked on.

After a few tanks of fuel you may find that 30mpg is a miscalculation. ;)

23mpg is good, 18mpg can often be achieved by messing with the stock single carburettor system - choke stuck on, wrong timing..running on 3 cylinders..

  14. I used to get 30mpg out of mine. Had an empi carb. Started playing up so had a rebuilt original carb put on. Had that set on a rolling road and the main jet was changed. Different beast now. So much more drivable in all the gears. Didn’t realise how flat it had been on that empi. Now only see 25mpg thou!

Think I prefer extra mpg and "flatness" at the moment, so the probably copy carb stays in!
Looks like the list of possible causes is growing.
    Am I surprised? No!
It's probably the same as with fixing people's bodies ... in which case I'll do a load of informed mini tweaks until the clouds part, and never know for sure what the main issue was
