Running rich .....

So, bearing in mind I've only just bought my first ever socket set ...
Our type1 1600 sp is chucking out black "smuts" which I'm told basically means it's running rich.
I'm about to re visit a few YouTube videos once I've identified which carb it is, so I can do the old idle/mix/idle thing, (hopefully under supervision) but apparently it could just be a case of filters and breathers being grubbed up ..... This latest threw me a bit.
    Any suggestions?
    Here's the cupboard:
Is the carb an easy ID?

  2. Hi , it looks like you actually have a twin port engine fitted which should mean a 34 pict3 carb, the carb looks new so probably just needs setting up, there aren't a lot of adjustments to be made on these so just take your time and you'll be fine.

Is it definitely a single port?
Take a photo of the manifold end

  4. Looks like a bocar or empi copy, that could be your problem but try to tune it and see.

... to see if the inlets are split? and the whole thing in three sections?
    Will do :hattip:

What are you basing the twin port on given the manifold isn't showing? (see @Baysearcher )
Think I need to take better photos of the carb and post here ... and compare them with, among other things, this!

  7. Mine puts out black smuts at start up - I’ve assumed it’s just natural condensation of water in the exhaust, with a rich mixture whilst the chokes are on. It stops when it’s warmed up. My problem is I don’t often take it on long enough runs to get it properly warm.

Otherwise, disregarding my recent problems with the cut off solenoids, it runs fine.

Is that just because it has the @snotty level of shine? or something structural you can see?

  9. Its just that it looks new and they dont make new Solex carbs.

I must admit I've based this on start up and what I find at the end of a run (which lately has been 30+ miles at 40 to 50mph)
There isn't a massive amount in there (this is in the engine bay as well as from the exhaust) so maybe it's only on start up like yours?
I'm getting almost 30mpg so maybe I should just leave well alone!
I've also got it into my head that a bit leaner will smell less??? (working up to doing weddings and that's going to be a factor potentially)

Just to see if it’s really single port.
The photo looks like the manifold end is splitting (as in twin port) but hard to tell.

If it’s doing 30mpg are you sure it’s not electric??

Haha! Indeed .... Taking a long slow look at converting a rolling shell actually. MANY factors and lots of different opinions as you can imagine. The VW one will.probably be available before that happens but who knows for how much??

  13. Single port don’t have the rubber boots and they also have heat riser pipes on the manifold.

Ah right, there you go then!
So it’s a twin port not a single; so it’ll probably be a crappy 34PICT3 copy.

  15. That’s a dual port, but it should still have heat risers.

  16. You can see the connection hiding behind the generator pedestal. Should look like this:

So at the moment it sounds like I've got a twin port, a pict-3 copy and missing heat risers?
There's no "de-icer" stuff going on in there either.
Would that be part of the same thing?
Appreciate the time you're all taking :hattip:
    That's TLB for you

  19. The heat risers help prevent carb icing. They tend to get blocked with carbon. Wonder why someone removed them. It’s not a Cali import, is it? They seem to like taking off anything to do with cool climate running.
