Roll over jig

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by 73johnathan, Jan 22, 2012.

  1. I have been looking at the current roll over jigs on sale in the Uk, does anyone know whether any of these jigs are available in Germany?
Is it possible to roll the bus on it's side, onto wooden pallets without causing any damage? Has anyone else found any other way of working on the underside?

  2. How about making your own...? shipping would be a small fortune to send one from here to Germany!!

Not that hard to make if you've got a decent welder :)

people used to roll cars over onto matresses , slightly lighter than a van but if you have enough man power why not ?.

  4. Would you?

I'm not convinced the side panels of the bus would take the weight

  6. my mates had his split shell rolled on a mattress on its side for about 3 years if you roll it slow it should be ok as the load is pread over a large area, but no i wouldnt do it to my own van!!!

  8. I have just finished my total resto with my late bay rolled onto a double mattress from the local tip. It worked really well but I made sure that I stripped out as much weight as pos before rolling it over. Make sure the lower sill slightly overhangs the mattress, or your welding sparks will cause it to smoulder (most mattresses are fire resistant)
I stripped my bus out completely-wiring loom, the lot, all shot blasted back to bare metal too. I then fabricated 4 stilts on castor wheels which I fitted to the chassis mounts for the front and rear axles. This meant I could spray it without the axles fitted and work underneath with plenty of room.
I had to sort my side panels anyway prior to spraying, but I found no detrimental effect from it being laid on its side whatsoever. All in all Im glad I saved the money and went the mattress route!!

  9. I personally would find it harder to weld/cut etc with the bus layed on the side..

  11. I made my own with a simple pipe bender and a bit of thought,

I had some box tubing lying around (it was actually suppose to be a set of gates for my sister that never happened)

Was nerve racking the first time we used it and getting it up and over was a pain till we figured it out but it worked perfectly and ive used it on a few vans to date.
