Rock n Roll Bed Meccano Set

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by gbcamper, Nov 23, 2013.

  1. So I've been kindly gifted an original rock n roll bed which needs tidying up however I am looking at the mecccano set in front of me and struggling to figure out what goes where. Can anyone show me a pic of their frame and hinge please? Thanks.

  2. Thanks. I think I am missing some sort of front upright to support the seat. Either that or I am clueless. I'll have to post a picture of the bits I think.

  3. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

That would help. I bet you have it upside down.

  4. Tried standing on my head and it's no clearer lol.

  5. Here are the bits - am I missing any?

I figure the bit closest to the camera is the back rest, the bit behind is the base of the seat, the bit against the wall is the rear upright, the two steel brackets will form part of the hinge in a triangle type shape... so I think I am missing a bit at the front to hold the seat up?

  6. Forgot to say - they bus is away getting work done on it so I can't put it in to help me figure it out. I thought I'd use the time to clean this bed up - but don't want to spend the time unless it is complete.

  7. OK...so it's a Devon style RnR. you have all the pieces . The only thing missing is the front valance which you need to make out of ply or similar.
The piece standing up at the back bolts to the floor, with the 'legs' mounted to the wheel arch and the rear bulkhead. the four flat bars provide the hinging mechism. it easier to do than describe so hopefully some one will post a pic

    Razzyh and gbcamper like this.
  8. Thanks. So the piece standing at the back is mounted the way up that I have it, and the flat horizontal top of it supports the top of the back rest when it is folded into a bed? Good to know it is there. Is the Devon style bed OK? Looking to save a few quid by using this one however I will ditch it if it's not worth keeping?

  9. PM @AdyF ....he's just been through this procedure....
no....i'll post some pics of my old one...hang on

  10. [IMG] this is the Base (I made this so the bed was on the sliding door side instead of the drivers side....it's an exact mirror of the original)

  11. [IMG] The seat back and seat base (legs fold out and rest on the front valance)

  12. Ahhhh!! I see now. That's fantastic, thanks @vanorak Feel like a complete spanner as I just could not figure it out!

  13. [IMG] The four hinge pieces...these bolt to the Pivot point and the corresponding holes in the base frame (first pic)

  14. [IMG] This end (base frame) bolts onto the wheel arch

  15. For what it will cost you, take it to a stove enamelers...they will blast clean everything in-house, or send it out on your behalf. Enameling will set you back about £50
Devon style beds are by far the best design IMO, especially with the folding supports....very easy to install, very easy to use...people have their preferences but i think these are great

  16. Looking at it, it doesn't look like the best RnR bed I have seen out there though. Wonder if it's worth persevering with or should I just bite the bullet and replace with a Rusty Lee or similar?

  17. [IMG] Last thing you'll need are the boards. Me and a mate of mine designed these on a CNC when he worked as a wood machining lecturer at Bolton College....should've kept the programme and knocked some more out, but hindsight's a wonderful thing

  18. Personally, I wouldn't bother spending the money on a Rusty Lee or Bluebird when you have a perfectly good one, that needs a bit of TLC...they are just variations/copies on the same theme.
I have a Rusty Lee and it's not as good...I only bought it 'cos it was full width and peanuts. If a Devon had come up for the right money i would have gone with that

  19. Thanks for your advice (again) @vanorak I will sort this one out with some TLC. I was given the original boards too! Your boards look great though. Cheers for the pics. I have it laid out perfect now.
