RIP . He lived in my hometown for years with his then young family in a modest house and just kept himself to himself like any normal person .
Not his biggest fan in the later years but he was a consumate proffessional and excellent at what he did. However he used to drive me insane by constatntly talking over the tunes and trying to sing along especially with iconic guitar solos.
Brilliant chap, loved listening to all the characters on his shows. Constantly listening when roofing and building and so often in the last few years as I was driving to various events and going in into Fridays afternoons and evenings on my way to Techenders among loads of other shows and listening to the seriously jockin no G. I now regret not pulling over while listening to where everyone was off too for the weekend and sending a message to Steve Wright to tell him where I was off too At Lutterworth for Techenders,,,,,,,,,serious Techin no G Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,Still listenin,,,,,,no G
Big part of my working life soundtrack over the last 25 years, I’d not really listened in the last few years as needed a change and got DAB, but really enjoyed, factoids, Ask Elvis, Barry from Watford, and the overdone but irritatin(g) serious jock’in carchphrase.
Really missed him when he stopped doing the afternoon show even if the Friday at 4.15pm "Jockin' no g" was annoying - but nowhere as annoying as the present incumbent - and I even remember him doing Top of the Pops back in the day !! I met him in New York in October 2002 whilst browsing in Century 21 Store - I was with my son and he said -"That looks like Steve Wright over there" and we went over to speak with him - he was very friendly and asked what we doing in NYC etc .
In better news, no one cried in Radio 2 today and all the tributes have largely stopped. I think it’s vital that all that stuff is bottled up and someone most of us heard daily for decades disappears asap. Personally I can’t wait for a colleague or better still a family member to die so that I can prove how stoic I can be, and let me assure you, anyone within my orbit will be instructed to do the same.
Well in a fitting response to my smart arseey, the ex wife rang around 5 minutes after I posted that to tell me her step dad has passed away. He sincerely was a top top man, I’ve not seen him in 14 years so less upset that I should be I guess. RIP kev you ripper you. If anyone wants me to mention a relation of theirs or indeed is feeling a bit ‘can’t cope’ give me a pm here and I’ll see what I can do.
