Me 1600 TP started to stall on tick over, I blew out the idle jet, checked the timing then set the carb. Ticks over nice now, but if I rev the engine it seems to hold high revs and recover to idle slowly. Runs OK though.
check the advance mech in the dizzy isn't sticking!! Most people forget that you need to pop a few drops of oil on the felt pad underneath the rotor arm, and then the seize up
Take the vac pipe off and suck, see if the base plate moves as per mr weedings post, then check teeth for oil/dirt etc
mine was doing similar, spent ages oiling cable, checking springs and swearing about it then noticed mat in cab was just catching accelerator pedal, moved that and all sorted!!!!! Note to self ( and everyone else ) do not forget to check for simple things first!!!!
Its most likely the advance but just double check your autochoke is not sticking or a duff cable connection or your autochoke might be on the way out? Had this on my beetle once , when it was hot and running ir a while the heater coil inside would break connection and it went cold hence moved the butterfly flap back to cold position and revved the ar@e off !
Thanks all, autochoke seems OK, will oil the dizzy and see if it makes a change, I have electronic ignition, hope that dont get in the way.
