Rev Limiting Rotor Arm

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by keithandtrudystype2, Apr 28, 2013.

  1. So after todays debacle setting the points and loosing the screw etc, I now know that I have a rev limiting rotor arm. This is one set at 5400 rpm.

Question is, do I stick with this one (replace with the same) , can I replace with a standard one?

PS I have no rev counter in the van!

  2. horses for courses dude!!

I put the non rev-limiting in... I like the un-complicatedness of them.. plus they're cheaper ;)

  3. Depends if you want to rev it past 5400 or not really ?
All new stuff is not as good as original Bosch

  4. The rev limiting ones have a tendency to fail quicker than the normal ones

  5. It's another point of potential failure, so I'd certainly get rid of it. Served a purpose in its day, I s'pose, when they didn't have anything cleverer.

Any stock aircooler revving to 5400 will make an appalling racket, so you'll know. Pieces of magnesium flying through the cab are also a useful indicator :)

  6. Thanks guys for the advice. To be honest it looks like its been in a good while the metal bits are well covered in crap. It is an orig Bosch. I will try the replacement standard arm. This is the first time in 3 years of van ownership that I have had the dizzy cap off.

  7.

You do know that you're supposed to service your van every 3000 miles/once a year if you do less than that!!

  8. Yes I know did the oil change at that interval, up to now it has been keeping on top of things. The engine was running sweet and I figured that I would do the dizzy area one day, that was today!

Did the brakes last year and check them regularly.

    Chastisement taken though!

Need to get more rigorous with the service intervals.

  9. It's just one of those things dude... look after your van, and it'll look after you :)

  10. I know, problem in our area is there is no one available who looks after air cooled vw's so I have to do it in my spare time I pay attention to the important things like oil, brakes and lubrication, it is also hard without a garage that the bus will fit in. To be fair we have had 2 good years camping in the van and covered nearly 6 000 miles in that time with no hiccups other than a wiring short that caused some smoke ( engine bay now rewired).

  11. Where are you located?? :)

  12. I know a guy at northampton... but nothing closer

  13. A new one will out last a genuine one ?
