Tappets rattle something awful if I don't start the van for a few days and I think the larger gaps make for more difficult starting, or is that just my imagination!! I believe that even new ones are prone to rattle and the only ways to improve on the situation are to use thinner oil (so they get pumped up quicker) or change 'em for standard tappets. How easy is it to swap 'em for standard ones - can it be done from the top by just removing rocker box covers etc or is it a heads off job? Thanks in anticipation of many well-informed replies!!
Is it noisy when its running or just on warm up? I think you'll find its a simple case of replacing the lifters for solid one, but... ...if you change the lifters you'll want to change the cam too - these will be worn together, if the cam has wear then when you put new lifters in the wear to them will accelerate and they won't last as long If you decide to swap give me a bell and i'll take your old cam and lifters off you - if they're not too worn
the cam for hydraulic lifters is different so the cam will need to be changed as well as the push rods which are shorter and thinner with Hyd. lifters. why not follow this and bench bleed them: http://www.ratwell.com/technical/HydraulicLifters.html
Thanks guys - I knew it wouldn't be easy!! I think maybe I'll let sleeping dogs lie for the moment as I've enough on my plate. Once it warms up its good but it can take quite a few minutes to get to that stage. Ihu - Hi - I haven't been very active for a while and last I heard your bus was immobile, so did you have it up and running for the Summer - such as it was?? Haven't seen it around!
