  1. have been looking at these recently, and was wondering what your opinions were on them..
be it overkill/pointless/expensive/awesome etc i want to hear it!!
also, is there anything else on the market like this??
    thanks

  2. What red9 kit are you looking at dude??

I'm running a coilover kit at the moment and have no complaints at all, great set up.

  4. Recently installed a coilover kit, was a breeze to install,
haven't driven it yet though

I was going down the whole front end set-up route but have decided against it.

  6. Running twin wishbone setup and its the dogs doodas light precise steering corners on rails soaks up the pot holes I cod go in forever well worth the money when you can get through a few quid trying all the other methods of lowering so 2 thumbs up

  7. I run the double wishbone set up and love it!

  8. Don't know if this helps but I've had a look at the coil over kits, are the steel lengths to replace the leaf springs and then you adjust the height on the shocks? How do they work?

  9. I had a red9 ez rider extra low coilover kit on my 71, i really liked it. i ran the red9 bump stops too for extra peace of mine.

the steel lengths replace the spring leaves because they are not needed, and the coilovers do all of the shock absorbing. but the upper and lower arms are still attached them in the same way as the leaves so they can pivot up and down freely.

    hope this makes sense.

Overall good stuff, wish i would of had the money to blow on a twin wishbone setup tho!!

  10. and yes the ride height is purely set by the coil overs.

  11. Personally not massively keen . Coil overs put more weight on the shock towers plus I have seen two examples where the replacement shaft has sheared off. Twin wishbone ,all the weight is on lower ball joint that is held in with a snap ring .
For me why change what was good enough for what 20 million busses ? If you want handling like a 911 then for me buy one

Reasonable points made (though that was 20 million buses made 40 years ago, if the design was so good why did VW change it on later buses?) - I've had a few musings after spotting some weeping on my steering box and following Baydreams issues last year with his set up - I think for many right hand drive vans the steering boxes are becoming a bit thin on the ground, as are the beams for non servo models like mine.

Whilst obviously they aren't yet unobtainable - they are starting to creep up in price - putting them somewhere near the Red9 territory.

I had heard one issue with the Red9 setup is how the steering rack is held on (my understanding is its a T25 rack) - and this is an issue on lowered buses (the height makes them liable to being hit).

Anyone with one at standard ride height?

No probs with the snap ring - lots of vehicles are done like that, but last time you commented on the weight being all on one ball joint I went for a look on the site and you're quite right of course. They must know this though and so hopefully will have allowed for it. I haven't heard a single complaint other than one not coming with a servo mount, but then after spending all that money you're going to talk yourself into it being good even if it wasn't or you'd feel a prat. They look businesslike to me.
I'd quite like a steering rack myself, the rest go take a jump, but it's not properly doable on a bus with the wheels so far behind the steering column - seems you end up with a boox as well, or replace the box with a rack and get stuck with the idler arm.

  14. If they say its tuv tested I'll shut up . I saw their rear split screen set up and was impressed with that but not they price

Are there any alternatives out there? Very reasonable point regarding the TUV test - given that basically it's the whole show that goes if one fails, steering, brakes, suspension!

I would rather you didn't shut up!

  17. The man who designs the red9 gear is a charted structural engineer so I think he definly knows what he's doing also he's 40 plus years under his belt in that field it is British engineering at its best based on a lotus design support great Britain lol

If I was allowed to spend the money I'd have the full Red 9 set up on the camper.
A mate has front & rear Red 9 on his splitty & it is a pleasure to drive.

  19. As a engineer I really like the front end red design set up,
Firstly how much are they and secondly how will it effect my insurance if I was to fit it to my bus.
It obviously goes down as a modification ,so is they any certification available.?????

£1850 supply only. Add £450 if you'd want it fitted.
    Don't think its certificated.
