Rear light lens - seals?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by volkswombat, Oct 6, 2013.

  1. Are the rear light lenses supposed to have a seal round them? I've found "a seal" on webMarmitees but it looks more of an afterthought than a proper seal. Or am I just being ay nall?

  2. Does that make sense? Think it's because it sounds like a cut to length job by. Might as well make my own seal out of. Something sealy.

The one I got from VWH were supplied as cut to length, unfortunately at the time, what they supplied as a pair was only enough to do 1 1/2 lenses. They did supply an extra set for free and said they would sort out the supply or labelling issue. They are the correct seal to sit inside the light lense I.e made for the job. I think they are slightly generic and the length issue was because they fit other lights.

Just checked VWH site and you need to buy a pair per light. So same product but you will have lots of waste.

  4. maybe a piece of pvc insulated wire the right diameter might do the job?

2 per light required, lense to housing, and housing to body, its difficult to believe that the seals are worth the £5-6 each they charge.

There's got to be a cheaper suitable alternative, like a draft seal for windows/doors that could be used.

  6. What section are the seals? mine have none fitted to the body and was going to look at "O" ring section, would this be any good?

  10. The light fitting bodies have a channel in the back that a strip seal pushes into - you just get a length of the stuff for either side.

Might be 4mm and the ones the suppliers supply have a smaller bore. This is what you pay for. The supplier has done their homework. Same thing for nuts and bolts. If you can specify yourself it all gets a lot cheaper.

I linked to that at random, I'm sure if you spent more than 30 seconds like I did you'd find something nearer the mark.

  12. Mine had no seals either, that's why I was unsure.
I've also found some on German camper company, says they're German manufactured and correct spec.
    Just got to choose.....

    Ta for replys

    That'll be the one!

  18. Now I am confused, (doesn't take much) when you mentioned bore I took it as hollow!
Woolies stuff is cheap, is that the correct size (diameter)?
Thanks for the thread volkswombat, that's another question out of the way, well sort of!!!
