Pub gas for MIG welding

  1. Hi all... advice needed, please :).

I've just bought a MIG welder with one of those stupid disposable gas cylinders that last ten minutes, but my father in law, who's in the beer distribution business, has got me a BOC pub gas bottle which presumably was filled with CO2. Can anyone advise where/how to get this refilled with Argon/CO2 mix? Do I need to set up a contract with someone or is it a question of finding someone who'll 'do me a favour' for a little reward?

  2. You won't get it refilled with argon/co2 mix... you might find someone (a mate) who will do a balance fill with you, but it won't be any of the places that distribute gas!!

Have a look on www.adamsgas.co.uk it's who I use, as BOC contracts are just getting OTT on the rental costs!!

You can use your mig with co2 and it will weld pretty good :), just get it filled again

  4. I leaned to weld with a pub bottle of co2

Its not as clean of a weld with co2 as it is with a mix so a little more time dressing the welds is needed

Im still on those small disposable bottles nowadays but luckily i can get them with more volume at a decent price from our local agricultural supplier
Once work picks up and ive some funds in the pot ill get a non deposit bottle of co2/argon from the place paul weeding posted

  5. I use southwest Gas Supplies. They do 10 and 20 litres bottles and fill to 200 bar so you get much more gas than either hobbyweld or Adams gas bottles. They fill to 130 bar.... Rent free too ;-)

  6. I use pub gas and it welds pretty good, its the cheapest option if you know someone in the pub game.
