WANTED prototype bay Seat fixings.

  1. Hi - I'm looking for the seat back fixings for passenger seat which screws into the bulkhead on '73 Bay and pair of brackets which hold down the seat base onto the wheel tub. Thanks for looking!

  2. I know you can buy the bottom brackets new, although I can't remember who sells them

  3. Thanks Beaver - I've seen them somewhere but can't remember where!! I'll keep searching.
I've just come across seat back fixing in C&C but quite pricey for what it is.

  5. Thanks Davidoft - would be appreciated. There are some squab fixing brackets on Ebay complete with runners for driver seat but I only need the passenger seat squab and back fixings.

  6. Hi try Karman Konnection for new seat base brackets & Graham at FBIVW for a used back rest bracket, they have loads

  7. Hi Sweeney Todd - thanks for info. Tried FBIVW but no back rest brackets in stock at mo, but I've found seat base brackets on KK so will keep an eye on this. Also some on Fleabay at present.

  8. No Problem, I got a back rest bracket from FBIVW for £12 posted, I think c&c have some but they are expensive in my opinion. There was a guy on Ebay selling one, he wanted £15 + postage but that was a few months ago. Happy hunting Tigger!

  9. P.S. If you are replacing your late bay seats for prototype bay seats there should be drivers seat runners welded to the tub, have a check before you buy new ones as they may not fit prototype bay seats, not 100% sure though?

  10. Thanks Sweeney Todd. We've acquired some prototype bay seats, whithout headrests which I think are OK for July 73 build even though not registered until July 74. We.re replacing Saab seats as SWMBO's legs aren't long enough to reach clutch!. The driver's seat is fine - runners still welded onto tub and seat fits in fine, but pax side brackets from tub have been removed and the bracket on bulkhead unscrewed. I'll try FBI again 'cos I think I may have got someone who wanted to go home for the night! As you say Late Bay runners are different to prototype bay, but everythng is telling me now mine is prototype bay but not registered until July 74.

  11. Hi again
I'm pretty sure '73/'74 busses are funny 'uns (bit of an inbetween or crossover if you will). You can tell the difference between an prototype bay & late bay by the position of the indicator lights (low down beneath the headlamps for early, high up next to front grille for late) also late bays have flared rear wheel arches. If your avatar is a photo of your bus I would say it is a late bay but there are some differences for 1974/crossover models. I'm certain someone on here can give you a detailled breakdown of said differences - just ask - they a kind bunch! We have a '76 kombi with a danbury conversion (I think?) which will eventually get newly upholstered (by myself) prototype bay seats, 3/4 bed matress & matching door cards etc. If you need any advice sourcing materials etc just ask :)

  12. Hi Sweeney Todd - yes, avatar is our bus and I agree it is a 'funny ,un. Everything says Late Bay to start with then when we try to get 'Late Bay' parts we find it isn't!!. First off we're told Late Bay door & hatch handles are black - ours are chrome. Heater cables for Late Bay are wrong length and it appear we should have 'flat' seats without headrests for '73 UK but '73 USA models had headrests. Same with you, if you need any help/advice from what we've learnt feel free to PM. We're re-veneeering Devon furniture at the mo. and looking at options to recover seats and new door-cards - Delilah's, Mad Matz Newton etc.

  13. Have a look at the technical mechanical thread "type 2 history" re crossover busses it may help, also I know a place in huddersfield for good quality prototype bay seat covers about £140 for a set to fit both seats (1 closed back, 1 open back). A young lady on ebay sells them online but you can actually get them direct from manufacturer just search vw bay window seat covers to have a look at them.

  14. If you don't have any luck with FBIVW let me know as I think I've got one stashed away that I won't need for a while.
I could sell you it and then get another when they're available again.

  15. Hi tiggertoes,

We need to do the same thing with our 72 as she can't reach the clutch. Really Struggling to find seats and fixings.

Where did you get your seats from?

  16. Bought from eBay = paid £119 the pair from Southend, and we're in Suffolk - not cheap but they're sound base to work from - a few broken springs. With eBay and large items it is often location and ease of collection which swings whether they're worth bidding. They often turn up but in wrong place!

  17. Hi Chad - thanks for the offer - I've now found a set in C&C but £45 and I only need one part. My son is good with metal and reckons he can make one so we'll give it a go.

  18. Hi Justin, as above Karmann Konnection for passenger seat base/tub backets, Your '72 should have drivers side seat runners welded to the tub for prototype bay seats. Try E-bay or there is a similar forum site to this one called the prototype bay (I think) for some old knackered prototype bay seats then do 'em up. You can get all the coconut pads etc from VWHeritage. I stripped a couple of prototype bay seats for our '76 Kombi then re-padded & re-upholstered with some seat covers off e-bay. They look spot on when finished - sorry no pics as yet.
