Actually... they did! But I think 2 lobes were retarded and it nothing to do with cooling number 3. Not just VW's either and it was quite a few degrees!

I stumbled on it somewhere sensible, I'm having second thoughts about googling because of all the myths! I think Volvo were another one and it was in conjunction with Bosch. Apparently, something like 3 degs and you couldn't tell the difference from a driving/power perspective - makes you think. I've seen distributors with far worse scatter than that and not many are rock steady. Apart from yours and mine of course.
